Mystery transmission or transfer case part?

I found this part while I had the exhaust out and was sweeping the skid plate:

It pops into something and has interior threads. Is it an automatic transmission or transfer case part? Could it have something to do with an engine oil or ATF leak?

Looks like a cable went through it, like it may have been a tension adjuster that fit in the top.

Im thinking that may be an emergency brake cable part. Looks a lot like the nut that tensions the ebrake cable at the "y" junction where the emergency brake cable goes to the two rear brakes.
