My YJ has gone through 3 starters in ~30k
It started about 2 years ago. I guess I'd had the YJ for about 6 months and had to replace the starter. I got the rebuilt/lifetime warranty one from AutoZone and stuck it on and called it a day. In January after about 9 months that one went out. Took it back to AutoZone and exchanged it. That one lasted about a month! Just changed it out again this weekend. I guess I'm gonna chalk it up to rebuilt crap. I was'nt suprised a rebuilt starter would go bad but it seems like I'm having some bad luck with them.
Has anyone else gone through few? Or is there something else that could be causing a problem. If it happens again of course I'll spring the extra bucks for a new/non-rebuilt one. Just want to make sure there is not something else causing them to go bad before I do that. Thanks.

Depends on the re-manufacturer, some will only replace what is bad and clean up the old parts and reassemble the product, others will replace all of the internals and only reuse things like the case and bendix gear.
I do know that the Autolite Lifetime Starters and Alternators that Checker, Schucks, and Kragen carry are made with 100% brand new parts on the inside, so you might give that a shot. Also, you might want to check the cable that comes from the starter to the battery, if it is corroded or damaged, it could be causing the starter to draw too much power and that could be burning it up. Another thing to check is to make sure you don't have any excessive oil leaks that cake the starter in oil, this can heat up and fry in the insides of the starter as well once operating temps are reached.

Unless you're submerging it in mud or water there is no reason for it to go bad so often.
When I replaced mine I sprung for a brand New not rebuilt Bosch Starter $145 instead of going through the same thing you are. My original lasted 16 years so this one should last just as long. Quote:
