My YJ Coil Conversion

Well I got tired of the ride of the leaf springs and decided to do something about it. I acquired a the front of a TJ frame w/ 3" Tera lift and the leftovers of an XJ from my engine/trans swap. This should eat up the desert washboard!

These links are just for mock up. I have RE joints and bushings to make new ones.

No going back now

Frame notch

TJ upper arm mount

All fits....time to burn it in.

Track bar bracket

Flexxed out

Gotta trim the inner fenders tomorrow and roadtest. It rode well in the dirt lot behind the shop.

Just a few questions..

Did you mount the rear control arms to the factory spring hangers or did you use the TJ mounts there also?
Are there only 2 control arms per axle?
What are the lengths of the control arms?
How did you make the spring perch for the axle, or did you use Tj/Xj axles?
What was the rough cost for the project?

Thanks for the help in advance, I am considering something like this in the future.

Are you going with coils in the rear as well, or just staying SOA??

Yep, used the stock leaf mount for the lower link. Added 6" to the TJ link length. There are 4 links just like a TJ/Cherokee.

Used a Cherokee front axle so I could have the mounts and HP.

The cost of this project is like $40+ electricty and grinding wheels. I have been acquiring parts for almost a year with this in mind.

It was much more work than I had planned. If I had to do it all over again, I would make my own buckets as to use the TJ's, was a lot of work.

The ride is killer, but I have yet to try it on the road.

No limit straps, just the shocks.

I'm on my way down to the shop to finish her up.

No plans for coiling the rear. Many serious TJ wheelers install leafs in the rear for better handling on downhills.

Thinking about some of these JKS ACOS Pro http://store.jksmfg.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=ACOSPRO&Store_Code=JKS01&Categ ory_Code=Coil_Spring and a pair of RE 2.5 Extreme Duty rear leafs. Then getting ny ladder bar on again.

This thing is my street wheeler, and daily driver. I have a 58 CJ and a Chevy 1ton 4x4 that are going to get mated for a real wheeler!

For the rear, could I recomend you look into BDS springs.... Very good rep on this board and an all around quality product.

Why go through all that trouble and keep the links short? If you're building new ones anyway, why not go all the way back to the skid? It would work a lot better.

Cool idea using the TJ bucket though.
