My trip
okay so i just drove home friday from UNCW with my best top sunrider top. i had the rear window out so it wasn' t too hot and it did 65-70 no problem with my 31's and 3.73 gears. So i put the hard top on and came back down today. what a difference! i did 75 the whole way, nice and quiet too! got about 15 mpg going 70-75. i just wanna say thanks to those of you who told me to lose them track bars cause man it rides so much better! thank you!

Track bars help with speed?
I get 20 MPG going 60-70 along these Carolina hills in my '93 with 31-33's and not sure on the gearing. |

I'm thinking the top helped out a good bit. I can't remember the last time my jeep got 15 mpg's nor the last time I calculated it. I have swapped tires and gears so I don't even try. Not that I would want to know anyway. Glad your jeep rode better.

If you had stayed under the 70 mph you probably would been in the very high teen's if not in the low 20's for fuel mileage. Too bad that some one doesn't come up with a aero design to attack to wranglers for long distance driving. But on the hard top if you add a air wing to the top back would help on the fuel mileage like they had on the wagoners. Reduce the rear drag vacuum that is there. Has soon as I can find one that I like I will putting one on my hard top.

I find it strange still you got 15 mpg.
With my 93 4.0L I get 14 city and 20 highway. How new is your spark plugs and air filter? |

spark plugs were done last summer and air filter has about 1500 miles on it. i had a full load in the back and my girlfriend in there too. plus there are quite a few steep uphill grades on 74 East

Top up or down, my mileage is the same. What tends to have the largest effect on mileage is whether I have a headwind or tailwind on long trips. Usually east bound highway is better than west bound because of the wind. The second of course would be an elevation change. Heading back from the mountains vs. heading up to them, is about a 40% difference in mpg.

Yeah, these Carolina mountains are murder. 74's a pain for sure, 85 is pretty horrible.
I'm glad to be moving back to Indiana for the purpose of fuel mileage. But I'm not looking forward to another winter of salt. :/ |

Salt sucks!!! i drove out on carolina beach and when i left o pressure washed the bottom and i still managed to get a few rust spots on the under body. besides sanding it down is there anything i can use that is rust preventitive? like rubberized paint?

You can hurculine it or something along those lines.
But the rust that's already there is gonna have to go before you do anything cause it'd just continue. I spray mine over with rustolium and liquid wrench until I can afford patch work. |
