My Rio Grande Build

So here's the story, up until now I have always driven very small gas sipping cheap economy cars. But this summer after having my car totaled (not my fault!) I was out of a car while we battled with the insurance company. Well, since I didn't have a car my friend let me borrow their '94 YJ so that I could have something to get me to and from work till I could get a check in the mail from the insurance co. It was their weekend toy so they really wouldn't miss it all that much. Well, as it turns out, I fell in love with the whole idea of a Jeep and immediately began looking for one to call my own. I was looking at an XJ one day at a dealership when I spotted another set of square headlights parked farther back in the sea of cars. I went to investigate and found a '95 YJ Rio Grande edition in pristine condition and decided I had to make it mine. Two days and $4k later I had this in my driveway.

This is my YJ parked next to the one my friend let me borrow.

I have a lot of plans for my Jeep and hopefully even though I am a full time student in college and a part time employee for minimum wage I will be able to do everything I want.

First thing I did was get it dirty. Hasn't been fully clean since this day.

Next was a brand new soft top from Pavement Ends and new factory style hardware. Black Rock wheels (exactly the same as Cragar Soft 8s), Kumho AT tires, windshield mirror brackets for the factory mirrors, Uniden CB with 4' Firestik, and more dirt.

Purchased the 4" Rough Country lift kit. Hopefully it will be installed over my Thanksgiving break and I'll be back home where I have the tools and space to work on it. Keeping my eyes open for a good set of 33s as well.

Not Uwharrie, I live in Boone and there are a huge amount of unmaintained roads and trails around here that cut through the woods and branch off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. They are 100% open to the public and free. You can even stop by a ranger station and they will give you a map that shows the trails and unmaintained roads you are allowed to drive on.

Haha thanks, I definitely miss the 35mpg I used to get compared to the 15 or so that I get now. And the tiny gas tank in the YJ doesn't help either.

But I couldn't take the top and doors off of my other car!

Have you checked the differential fluid recently after the water/mud crossings?

If so, what color is it?

Yep, it was changed by the dealer before I bought it and it is still amber in color, not milky.

Joe Dillard 10-26-2009 09:56 PM

Let's hope it stays that way. :)

Mud/water crossings can take their toll on parts that get submerged as you may know.

Mud/deep water = the devil. ;)
