My Jeep ate its engine ! - need advice on engine swap...

I got my 1994 YJ about a month ago knowing that it had a slight engine knock but the price was right. Well last night while pulling itself out of a mud hole it decided that it was time for a new engine and thru the rod out the side of the engine block. Jeep people are great though... another Jeep saw it happen, laughed his *** off, then pulled me out . I need advice on how to go about upgrading the drivetrain enough to have some weekend fun without sinking a ton of money into it. Right now it is a stock 4 cylinder with auto trans and 231 transfer case. I was told that changing it out with a Jeep 6 is more trouble than it is worth. I was wondering which trans with bolt up to the existing transfer case and if a Chevy V-6 or V-8 is a better overall fit for an everday driver to do a little mudding on the weekends with. Or if it is better in the long run to just buy one already with the mods done...Any help is greatly appreciated... Thanks !!

My jeep did the same thing about a month ago. I just put in a new motor from atk. It would be best to just find a solid low miles junkyard 2.5 rather than buying a new one. I spent about a week trying to find all of the little parts that i needed. If you get a junkyard motor it should come with everything.

Others will be able to advise you on SBC swaps, but it is a big job with many details. Many others find the 4 screaming squirrels to be adequate. Supporting the latter group there are many folks who may have access to a used 4 cyl they took out when they did some type serious upgrade, or they could be available in the junkyards to be rebuilt, put in as-is, or you can source them thru engine rebuilders online.
