My DIY Misting system (redneck A/C)

So I have had a ton of people asking me about this and when I did it originally I never did a write up or took any pics. I recently re-did and gutted the whole interior of my YJ, so I had to re-do this so I figured it would be a good time to do a write up on it.

Basically the idea is like those misting systems they sell for your garden or that restaurants, amusement parks, etc use in hot environments to help keep people cool.

When I did this originally I used a windshield washer bottle with only one pump, and 4 nozzles. 2 above the drivers seat, and 2 above the passenger seat. This was great and worked well, except there were occasions that my wife did not want it and I did, and vise versa. So I had the forethought this time around to find a bottle out of an SUV with 2 pumps. One for the front wipers, and one for the rear wipers. This way I have each pump running on its own switch, and only running one set of sprayers. one switch for my wires seat, one switch for mine.

Got the bottle at my local pick n pull out of IIRC a Mitsubishi Montero or the like. cost me 7 bucks with the pumps and wiring pigtails still attached. Basically decide where you will mount it, take some measurements, and wander around the junkyard til you find what you want.

The rest of the stuff I got at Home Depot in their sprinkler and irrigation section. You may have to check a few stores. as I understand it they don't all carry this stuff

These are the components needed to make this work:
Windshield washer reservoir with pump(s) and wiring
1/4" Drip irrigation tubing.
1/4" Misting/fogging nozzles (they sell several types of these, what you use is up to you)
1/4" T fittings (optional depending on how you want to set it up)
Zip Ties for running tubing
Wiring components (I left out of the write up. ground, switch, power, easy stuff)







Step One:
Rinse and clean the hell out of the bottle. You do not want to be misted with washer fluid!!

Step 2:
Find a good place to mount the bottle. I put mine on the floor as seen here mounted to the little step down in the back behind the front seats.



Step 3:
Attach the tubes to the pump outlets. This tube is plastic like the ARB air lines so it can be a little hard to press on there, but it will go. No need for hose clamps. they won't leak.

Step 4:
Run your tubes. I ran one off each pump. one up the passenger side roll bar, one up the drivers side. When you secure the tube make sure you don't cinch down too tight or you can kink the hose.

Step 5:
Decide where your nozzles will go. I ran 2 per side. so I cut the tube where the roll bar arcs up to place one towards the outside. use a T fitting and a short length of tube for your nozzle






Step 6:

Secure and aim your nozzles:





Step 7:
Wire it up, fill it up, hit the switch, and enjoy.

You did clean out the tanks really good before you used them right? Depending on what was put in there by a previous owner, they can have some nasty stuff I wouldn't want sprayed all over me.
But other than that, too cool (pardon the pun).

I did this one today. I found a metal water bottle that would be a good donor and paired it with a new washer motor.


Then plumbed up with standard washer hose until I teed off for the first fogger then went to standard drip hose before going into a shutoff valve to have "driver only" accessibility. Keeps her from yapping.




Then the passenger side which is optional of course.



Thanks so much for the idea, I hope it catches on with others as it did for me. Just gotta add a switch and wire it up.

The concept is cool and I like the idea. I don't think I would do it here in the South due to the humidity but in the Southwest I'll bet its awesome.

I dont think that would work well here in the Mid Atlantic eithier. Way to humid but great idea. I bet it works well in places with low humidity.

Any idea of the flow rate of the misters? How often do you need to refill? I really like this idea...and anti's method with the water bottle is pretty slick!

do the windshield washer pumps matched to the garden mister nozzle actually mist or does it spit on you?

I have some 3 gph in at the moment but I was feeling ambitious so I may scale it down a hair.

I tested quite a few different heads including a low rate nozzle set up for agricultural weed spraying and found that the garden jobbers have the lowest particulate count. Probably why they call them foggers. The higher the pressure, the finer the mist. Also because its attached to the bottom of the b pillar the mist seems to waft more and be less of a direct spray as if it was closer to the body.
