My '94 "build" thread

Ok, so I use that term loosely for now as I pick away at easy stuff ... but here goes. When I picked up this '94 a couple of months ago, it had a 2 1/2" Procomp lift & 32" MT Wranglers. I haven't wrenched on a vehicle in quite some time, so decided to start small. And since it stays in the mountains, I only have every other weekend to mess with it:

Interior
Was feeling a bit cramped, so moved my seat back on the mounting brackets as far as I could. I think I'm still going to fab some supports for the sliders as they are now hanging pretty far off:

Since they are all the way back, the seat angle seemed pretty extreme. I put a poly shock bumper between the sliders and seat supports to shim the back up and to give me a bit of cushioning:

You can see here the difference between the two seats: passenger seat is all the way back, but probably still sits 1" + ahead of the drivers seat:

That shot also shows the new Grant Signature Steering wheel I installed - slightly smaller diameter gave me significantly more leg room when combined with the seat set back. Pretty easy install except you need to add one more wire from the horn button to make it all work. When I installed the wheel, I bought some of those pin head torx bolts to try to trip someone up if they wanted to take my wheel (it comes with 5 black allen bolts). This pic also shows the difference in seat set back as both are all the way back on their rails:

You can also see my other interior upgrade ... old school, ball knob style tap handles for both the shifter & trans case shifter. This is so freakin' simple because the threads are exactly the same:

I removed the rear seat and also bolted in some straps on the floor that the dogs harnesses snap into which allows them to move back & forth independently, but they can't get over the sides or out the back. You can see them chilling here with their harnesses on:

I bolted a climbing bolt hanger

(Metolius Enviro Bolt Hanger at REI.com) to the vertical part of the tub where it drops down from the back to the front with a 3/8 gr 8 bolt, positioning it so the flat part of this hardware with the big opening is level and just above the floor. I then ran a webbing loop from this point to the seat belt bracket in the middle of the tub - water knot is perfect for this and the loop gives the two seperate web straps.

Some other guys on here use netting along the sides of the family rollbar and I think I may add that next summer.

Exterior
I flipped the vent cover around, rattle canned the screws (and the screws for the headlights, turn signals & markers), the windshield supports, the remote mirror mounts and the headlight surrounds. I replaced the hood latches, put in new Hella Halogen headlights, clear turn signals & markers with amber chrome bulbs (so you don't see amber until they are on). I'm not going for the ricer look, but just hate those amber signal & marker lenses:

After:

After:

And with the front tow hooks & AtoZ Fab Rock Guards installed

Handling
Replaced the ball joint that attaches to the pitman arm:

Hit all the shackle bolts with Blaster PB and checked the torque ... just spraying them down un-froze them and gave a much different ride.

Changed the oil, trans fluid, transfer case fluid, flushed the radiator & replaced the anti-freeze. Installed a new radiator cap (the old one was leaking), installed a new horn. I had the tires siped last weekend, too as one of the reasons I have this is to drive it to the ski hill (plowed paved roads). Replaced the water pump, thermostat, hoses & belt. Installed the AtoZ Fab Rock Guards, front tow hooks & removed rear track bar.

Coming up? Remove the front track bar (?) and potentially the sway bar. Replace the shocks. Put on 5/8" lift shackles. Install the tilt column I picked up on ebay. Install the ashtray/ipod dock I'm fabbing up right now & replace the speakers.

Eventually? New rear bumper with swing away tire mount, winch and maybe new front bumper, front sport cage, family style roll bar (po had got rid of it because he liked the sport) & some different fender flares (TJ?)

I know not nearly as extensive as some of the real builds on here ... but my little project!

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

Jblondie813: I put a pic of the hardware & link to REI for the part & hopefully better description of how I did the straps for the dogs. Its really simple, but works well with the two dogs - I just made some leashes from webbing that go from the harness to a locking carabiner for each dog.

I really like them - quite comfortable and super side bolstering. I definitely prefer sport style seats as they hold you in quite well even with a standard seat belts.
