My 90 YJ pictures.. let me know what you think

Well, I bought my Jeep a little over a month ago with about 124,000 miles. It now has 125,xxx, and the only thing I added was a Pioneer headunit, and 2 Pioneer speakers. I have yet to install the speakers. Not much is wrong with this Jeep and I could probably have it looking nice with a little money. It is a 2.5L 5 speed and the tires are BF Goodrich T/A 31x10.5 R15LT. I don't know much about tires, but how well are these? I heard Jeeps will have rubbing problems with 31inch tires but I don't. The 4wd has something wrong with the vacuum system that I'm looking to fix, and next I'm replacing the heater core, heater fan, and windshield glass. I leak 1 quart of oil a week, is that alot? Most likely the common leaky rear seal needs replacing? As you can see the tires don't have white letters like the rear spare, why is that? Could I paint the letters and if so, what paint would you recommend? I was thinking of getting a pair of hella fogs, and replacing the front bumper with one of those black tube ones. Maybe even get a light bar for the roof and have 4 big hella lights on it. I think the hella will match nicely with the white rims and if I paint the letters on the tires white it'll go nicely. Either that or replace the tires with chrome, get chrome trim and rims and a black top but that might get expensive and too blingy. I haven't decided if I want to get a black top with the white rims, what do you think? The interior is gray so i'm most likely going with a black top. I just want everything to flow nicely because now I think the white doesn't match unless I get more things white (like letters and hella lamps with the hella covers) Well, let me know what you think:

"I leak 1 quart of oil a week, is that alot? Most likely the common leaky rear seal needs replacing? "

That's all the oil that you leak? I'd be worried that the EPA is going to fine you! Get that fixed BEFORE you do anything else! Or you might find yourself stuck somehwere.

Most if not all tires have white lettering on one side and black lettering on the other. If you want your tires to match, just take them to a tire shop and have them re-mounted.

Congrats on your YJ. Looks good.

Regarding your oil leaking, check your air box to see if you have oil it it. If so, you are experiencing some blow by. If you are, first check your PVC system. Replace the valve and check the hoses. Make sure everything is clear. If not, sooner or later, it will get real bad and you're looking at rings or a rebuild. You can drive it that way, but you'll have oil everywhere except where it needs to be.

Re the 4WD, that's is typical also, especially for its age. The dealer vacuum harness is really expensive as I remember. My mechanic redid mine and it works well. There is an aftermarket cable system that eliminates the vacuum system (posi lock) that may be worth looking into.

IMHO, worry about the mechanics first especially your 4WD. The looks can come later, as you can. It looks great as it sits.

Good Luck!

just got scared of my jeep

Well, I came home from school today, saw smoke coming from under the jeep like usual, but I wanted to check exactly where it was coming from so i left it idleing, got out and looked under. Just as I thought, oil dripping on the exhaust. Well, nothing I didn't know so I let it be and shut her off. I decided I should park her up the hill on a level surface so i can check the oil level after 15 minutes of cooling. Well, I start her up, move a foot and I hear "boom boom boom" i shut her off right away, scared somethings wrong. Check everything (oil even on hill, decide i must have heard a garbage can and start her up again, no noise yes it was a garbage can.. few thank god i dont need a new engine

If they are the same tires, there probibly turned White Letter to the inside. Most off roaders do this as the white gets rubbed off on rocks and in mud anyway.
For your wheels, just scuff sand your rims with emery paper or sand paper, put grease on your tires, and put a couple coats of black paint or undercoating on your rims. Wash off the grease and WHHAAALLLAAA Black Wheels for less than $10.

Personnaly, I've found no need for a light bar, much less 4 big hella lights when driving around town. Even on the trails, as most are closed at night. Must be a bling thing....and that's ok too.. Just don't go overboard. I've seen some show trucks with over $5000 in lights. For what?

Spend your money to make it functional and spend it wisely. Nothing hurts worse than waisting money on something your going to upgrade again later.

Just paint the wheels black. Because as soon as you get snow or go wheelin' they get ruined trust me I learned this the hard way. 90wrglr is right about the lighting, plus it's probably illegal. Here in MD you can't even have them hooked up much less on.

well, i checked the airfilter and the filter is dry. So my problem is most likely a rear main seal? It looks like theres oil on the firewall and upper part of the engine, is this what a leaky rear main seal does?

I think black wheels will be too much on a black car, not enough contrast. As for lighting, I'm thinkin of getting that tube bumper (cause mine is bent) and 2 hella fogs on that. A light bar will probably ruin the view with the top down.

Today with the top down I noticed a clicking sound. I'm preaty sure it's coming from the transfer case because when I had it in 2 it was hard to hear, 4 had a slightly different sound and N was more noticable than the others. Does anyone know what my problem is with the transfer case? The sound is similar to a clicking or ticking.

I love the oldschool white wagon wheels, IMHO I'd keep them for sure! Instead of the usual AR767 or similar black steelie you see everywhere...

The rear main seal would be leaking oil all over the bottom of the engine. Sounds more like a valve cover gasket or PCV or rubber seal. Check all the hoses coming from the valve cover to ensure their hooked up and that no oil is dripping off them. Clean your engine from as much oil as possible and then drive it a short distance, or longer until your oil leak is detected.
