Does the light turn on? Check the vacume lines, then you motor, if it is not that then it might be the shift fork inside the axle.

So I've got a question along the same lines as this. I've got a spare vacuum locker that came with my YJ, and I'm not even sure if the one that's in it currently is dependable or not, so I'm considering taking a route that I've heard some people take. Is it fairly difficult to rig up a couple cables through the firewall that you could pull that would be connected to the locker to engage/disengage it by drilling two holes in it, one on each end? If someone has a better way of getting around the YJ vacuum reliability issue I've seen, I'd love to hear about it.

well the vacuum motor just engages your 4wd no locker. because the passenger side of the axle is much longer up until 1995 they used a vacuum motor to engage two shafts together to make it be in 4wd. that being said you can do it both ways they sell a kit which is the posi-lok or there is a homebrew version they do make a posi-lok kit for stock vehicles and for lifted vehicles so if you decide to buy it be sure to choose the one that will best suit you
homebrew write up http://home.earthlink.net/~stevenschreiber/jeep/tech/cabledis.htm cheapest posi-lok kit http://www.discountjeepparts.com/product_info.php/cPath/2880_238_1855/products_id/1949

Thanks crb577, that homebrew kit is pretty much what I was thinking of doing, but just a little more organized.
