IIRC I only used the main power wire on the back of the alternator, and one wire from the 2 pronged plug, the other was taped off.

here is a pic from all data to try and help you out.. this is from a 91 Gmc truck setup, so the fuse box is different from th jeep, but you can use the picture to help determine which wire is used for the exciter on the alternator/generator..

thanks for that.

although, it didn't really help me. like i said i'm dumb when it comes to electrical..... (one of the reasons i'm going carbed at first.....) very minimal wiring.
is there anybody who's done a carbed 350 swap that can tell me what's what?

sorry for the ignorance, but i'm dead set on not hiring a shop to do it.....i'm a do-it-yourself kinda guy!

the Three-wire Alternator uses a battery wire, ignition/warning light wire and voltage sensing wire

You know you can take the alternator down to a starter/alternator shop somewhere and they can convert your alternator to a single wire setup. Then all you have to do is run the wire to the battery. I've been runnin mine that way since 02.

Red wire to switched 12V

BIG red wire on back, tape off white wire.

I wanted to solder that connection anyway so I went and tore it apart.

thats an idea..... i'm assuming you have the internal voltage regulator? does it work normal? i know we have a forklift at work that had a gm alternator put on it, and you gotta rev the motor everytime you start it to get the voltage regulator to kick in.....

again, thanks for ALL replys! helpful or not! still learning! when it comes to wrenching, i can do almost anything...... but anything electrical or electrical related is 100% foreign!

Yes I have a plain old GM alternator with an internal regulator. It works like normal. I haven't paid much attention to whether or not I have to run the RPMs up to excite the alternator or not but I would guess mine is that way.

I had the excitier wire to a switched 12v source, and burned up voltage regulators every couple of trips. I then wired it in parallel with the coil positive wire and it's been fine for almost 3 years. The regulator was getting too much power with it's own deticated switched source.
