ahhh.... i hate electrical stuff! spent most of today wiring stuff to get it fired up..... get in, turn the key.......turns over, but no spark..... got fuel and plenty of juice, just no spark. messed with it for over an hour trying to figure it out to no avail. we'll see what this coming week brings..

distributor all wired in right?
i had to get a stronger 12v signal for mine, the one from the heep wasnt giving enough juice to the chevy for it to fire....
try running a good hot wire to the distributor and go from there, after you check all your connections etc first!

hhmmm wierd.....assuming the dissy is grounded the same as the battery (not just a battery on the shop floor?)
connector to coil good?
is the coil good?
no spark by looking at a plug, or just trying to start it? if not looking at a plug, take one out or grab an old one and physically look at it when cranking the motor.
must be something simple.....like all the major PIA's i have ran into!

no battery is in the heep, ground from motor to battery, battery to firewall and motor to firewall and so on.....SO who knows..... i found a brand new whole distributor assembly by HEI for a good price.....comes with everything from the gear to the cap. may just buy that rather than play the "replace this replace that" game..... that way i eliminate all possibilities at once.

so close yet so far away.....

IT'S ALIVE!!!!!put the new dist in today..... after about 20 seconds of cranking..... it started!! probably the most excited i've been in a while!

to-do list to be done:
wire elec fan
mount power steering pump and belt
fill trans
modify or fabricate trans crossmember
install front driveshaft
put fenders and hood on
clean up wiring under hood
and the biggest thing: exhaust.

i do have one question.....the distributor is wired directly to the battery..... and the fuel pump is on a switch in the cab..... when i turn the key off..... it runs til it runs the gas out. i need to kill spark so it dies right away. i could just put a switch there too, but would rather wire it thru the ignition so when i turn the key off, there is no spark and the motor stops right away. how would i go about finding the correct wire to do this?????

That's exactly the swap/s I'm looking at doing to my '90 YJ. Do you have to worry about any emissions? I have to drop in a '90 or newer engine with all the emissions (which I don't mind I guess) stuff. I'm still looking into getting everything before I start buying the wrong engine and so on. Looks like you did your homework! Good luck and keep us posted.

no emissions inspections on 95 and older vehicles in NC..... so i'm golden there..... plus "i got friends" all in all it was a relatively easy swap. (a lot easier than i thought at least)

anybody got any input on the electrical question i posted?

I have an 87, so I don't knowifit will be the same wire, but.... The yellow wire was keyed 12 volts, though of a smaller diameter than the hei wire needed to run the dizzy. I ran that to a relay and wired directly to the battery for hot, then from the relay to the dizzy. Starts and turns off by key, the yellow wire only trips the relay, the power comes right from the battery.

It's coming from the ignition switch....it comes out of the grommet just to the drivers side of center on the firewall....just above the rocker cover. In the jeep, it goes to the starter relay.

you can use any switched wire from the jeep key, to the ignition circuit.
as long as it has enough power to switch a relay, you'll be good!
find a wire that is hot in start and run, make that the on/off switch for the relay, wire the dist. to the relay, and give it power and ground.

ahhhhh the joys of ecm's.....no seperate relays, just all the other pia's in the world
