My 1988 YJ Project BIGHEEP

Figured I would post up some pics of my current YJ project. I picked up this 1988 YJ last fall from a local Jeep and 4x4 shop. The owner of the shop is a great guy and just wanted it out of the parking lot. It had 190,000 on the clock but ran great and by the shiny black paint on the block it looked as if the motor had been replaced at some point. It had newish paint, a 3ish inch lift, a nice hard top and doors. We put it on the lift and it had very little rot (one small soft spot). The bad is that the slave cylinder was shot. He figured for the hard top with tinted glass, rust free hard doors, best top soft top and bikini top he could get at least $700 bucks so I offered him $800 and I was the new owner.
Here are some pics of when I towed it home.

Since the pics above it has gone through a bit of a transformation. The first big surprise was when I went to pull the tranny and realized at some point the BA10 had been swapped out for an AX-15. While the tranny and T case were out I also installed a HD SYE in the NP231. I have painted most of the frame with POR-15, installed a Daystar 1" BL, MORE and Currie boomerang shackles, installed a used TOMKEN bumper, ditched the pulse air system and replaced the exhaust, installed my old Ramsey winch, flat fendered the front fenders with modded TJ flares.
I have been busy this winter.

When removing the stock flares and side steps I uncovered RUST! I knew it was there and actually was pleased to see it was not as bad as I had thought.

This was the soft spot I referred to in the first post.

I am waiting for the warmer weather so I can roll it out of the garage and do some sandblasting and welding.

Here are some pics of the flat fendering.

I am going to be running 34" LTBs with minimal lift.

Damn, that would have been a bargin at 2x what you paid for it. ****, on long island in the summer you could get 4x that for it if the slave was fixed.

Good buy, and I am jealous.

Wow, thats a sweet ride! Looks a lot like mine actually, black with full dors and the chrome face grill (love that combo, thought I may be biased)

It sweetens the deal even more that you've got the AX/15. Sheesh, some people get all the luck....

One thing I noticed though, I thought all YJ's has pass. dump exhaust...? Yours does not, might want to check that out at some point, I didn't think there was any room to run it on the drivers side...

Looks like it has dual exhaust. Nice steal by the way.

DAYUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmm

I hate you

That rust looks awfully familiar. Just an FYI that I ran into, that roll bar mount is hiding rust if you had it all the way up to it. Great find man, great find.

What is that hanging down??? Never seen one of them....

The drivetrain alone would go for more than $800 around these parts.
Good job.

Yeah man, holy cow. Even if you had to buy another tranny, you'd still be ahead of the game. People sell their rotted out, top-missing, clutch slipping, bearing-broken 4 cylinders down here in PA for at least $3K.

That's the speedometer cable and output from the transfer case.
