I intend to just replace the rear crossmember like what is done in this thread: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f12/custom-rear-frame-cross-member-442274/

I just checked out that thread and it definitely would solve a ton of problems for me, I almost tore my receiver out on my last trail run pulling a expedition out of a snow hole. I will start rounding up parts for my crossmember next weekend

I appreciate the replys, but what I'm really looking for is how you attached the rear bumper. Did you simply bolt it up to the thin factory bumper, remove the old and fabricate new hangers or what. Just want some of your ideas, and any pics.

If you want a strong mount, attach it directly to the frame. Weld some c-channel perpendicular to the bumper (parallel) to the frame and then bolt that to the frame in several places on each side.
The c-channel is stronger that flat bar.

Do NOT bolt it to the old bumper.

The problem is with the body mount bolts, and the fuel tank mount with the fuel tank shield that is bolted directly to the old original bumper. I'm looking at maybe fish plating the frame on the outer side and the bottom side where there is a threaded 7/16 hole to be used, it is on each frame rail, along with a gusset running from the frame to the new bumper outer side of frame due to the fuel tank with minimal clearance and not allowing for any gusseting on the inside of the frame. If anyone has any ideas I would like to hear them. thanks.

aside from replacing the factory cross member, which may not be necessary, I have been looking around at other jeeps for ideas myself and the only idea I have come up with is to relocate the rear shakles to under the frame like on a cj7 and possibley use c-channel with gussets behind the factory cross member then bolt my home built 2x4 bumper to the factory location. the c channel would cover the old shackle hole and I would add a second for another through bolt, possibley even weld them in place. does anyone see any pros or cons to any of that?

This is what I did as part of a frame repair.
I deleted the factory rear crossmember. Welded the bumper on the frame. Plenty of space for my 1 1/4" angle to mount up the rear of the tank (not pictured as of this writing). Bolting to the stock sheet metal rear crossmember is a recipe for disaster with anything substantial bumper wise. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f12/l-k-what-i-found-pics-524638/

I'm in the same stages right now of reinforcing the rear bumper area. I can say, from the PO's experience and what he left me with, that the stamped piece of tin at the back is useless! It'll be gone in favor of a new beefier bolted on piece.
