Heres a good write up
http://www.4x4xplor.com/aussielocker.html
Theres a few other write ups on the net
I have the aussie up front. As far as I am concerned the aussie IS the best. On the dry road you dont even know its there. The Aussie takes me everywhere i want to go off road
As far as things needed to install, your going to need a torque wrench, thers no way around that unless you want to screw things up. A vise helps too. Brake fluid to break the suction of the carrier in the diff.
I had to use a pry bar to remove the carrier. Make sure you dont put the springs where the pins should be and the pins where the springs should be. I did, reininstalled, did the spin test and failed. So i guess you can say i did it twice. Be careful with thise springs, they can fly !!! Also have a plastic wrap ready to cover the bearing caps after removal to keep them dirt free. DIRT KILLS!!!! Thats all I can think of off the top of my head. Also go out and buy the gasket for the diff cover, dont waste your time with RTV , its too messy

Order it from these guys. The source.
http://www.aussielocker.com/item.php/TMd1d4cf/1aae/20/320002/.html
They have nice tech support.
Heres a paragraph from their page
The Aussie Locker relies on a simple and highly innovative mechanical design which makes use of two distinct sets of forces, "ground driven" forces acting on a wheel when cornering (forces the outside of the wheel to turn faster) and the engine driven forces through the drivetrain. The combination of these two sets of opposing forces and the unique Aussie Locker design allow the automatic locking an unlocking of the driving gears when a vehicle turns or requires differential action.

Theres alot more info there on the site.

To answer your question.... Yes, it engages when its needed

hey fataltherabbit,
i have wheeled mine 2 times now with my aussie up front. i absolutely love it!!!
one thing i would tell you not to do...
when re-assembling the front pass side intermediate shaft back in the carrier, DO NOT put the c-clip back on (if yours even has one)..the directions say to put it back on when re-installing the axle and carrier, but if you do this you'll have a difficult time getting it back out if you have to...you'll know what i mean when you are putting it back together

oh yeah, i got mine from these guys...

Although I have a DD I drive my Jeep on road ALOT. I installed an Aussie and love it. Listen to everyone here, read the old posts, they are great. Silent on road and I mean silent. The only thing to remember is you will have to have the front driveshaft balanced(Well I did). It will be spinning all the time so I got a vibe. Plus some say you will lose a little MPG, if that matters to you. You also have to keep the axle disconnect factory or posilok.
Its a great investment for traction purposes.

not to hi-jack....your front DS shouldn't spin all the time (unless you have a tj pass axle shaft). It's possible your vac motor or vac line to dis-engage 4wd isn't working?

one thing to keep in mind is it will actually engage before the front axle does. even if the pass side doesn't engage (ie you have a selectable system like the posilok or a faulty vac system that doesn't lock up right away) the locker will still drive the driver side wheel as soon as you put power to the front drive shaft.

It will always lock the drivers side axle to the transfer case main shaft. But ends there until 4WD is engaged.
Then with the pass axle locked (vac or posilok)the two are truely "locked".
