Mopar v8 swap with mopar tf904

I have this thought of doing a mopar v8 swap in my 89 yj.
It has the tf999 and stock transfercase.
This is my question: Can I put the internals and tail housing from my jeep tf999
And put it in a mopar tf904 housing??
If so, it would be a piece of cake to do this swap.
It would be a tf999 with mopar bolt pattern.

Best regards
Klas

I think so. There may be year to year differences, like lock up torque converters, etc. but should work.

personally I have no clue if it would work or not, but I'm curious - why not just use the 904 as-is?

You have to put the tailhousing from the tf999 on the 904 to make it work with the transfer case.

Also the 999 has a 2.74 for the first gear vs 2.45 for the 904. I have heard that you can use the jeep output shaft and tail housing on the 904 but haven't heard of anyone doing it. I am using a 727 trans from a mid 80's dodge truck as its beefier and will bolt to the NP231 in my YJ after I change the input gear on the transfer case.

Yes this^^. And I believe the 245 and 274 gear sets can be swaped also.

I rebuilt my tf999 a couple of years back, regret that I didnt think of checking this, since I have a tf904 laying around.
