Has anyone had experience with purchasing these mirrors aftermarket? Where and how much did I you pay ? Are they decent. I've heard of some mirrors folding in on their own at about 30mph
I haven't had good luck with aftermarket mirrors. I had two sets of YJ mirrors from Quadratec that the glass fell out of in a year. They vibrated harder then stock and were hard to see out of. I have a set of TJ mirrors from the Quadratec on now. They are ok but the one wants to fold in when I shut the door or drive over 50. The don't have the nut and spring so I cant tighten it up. Apart from that the TJ mirrors have been hanging in for a few years now.
I have some of the economy Q Tech mirrors that mount on the bottom front of the windshield hinges so you can pull the doors and not lose the mirrors. No matter how tight the swivel joint on the mount, the arms swung back at any kind of speed. I used an old trick of putting a dab of valve grinding compound inside the swivel. Mirrors stay put and are still easy to adjust.
Has anyone tried to fix the stock ones? Mines sag on the first bump and I've tightened the screw all the way. My passenger side also has a broken glass and they both need to be repainted. The paint is chipping away.
I tried fixing the stock ones way back when, had the smaller ones for my '93 on the hard doors. They didn't last long. I later paid $70 or so for a pair of those pictured in the first post in this thread. I still have those on the doors and they do fine.
I don't like those mirrors. I've had two sets. I believe I paid $59.99 from Ebay.
When I originally bought them, they were attached to the doors and would move every time I closed the door. The style I bought have allen screws at the base of the mirror next to the boot that covers the ball assembly the mirror rotates on. The metal of the screws is very cheap and you can't get good enough torque to tighten them as much as need. The constant tightening, coupled with the angle the allen wrench had to be inserted, quickly stripped the heads. I tried to replace with stainless steel hex, but there's not way to get the mirror apart without breaking it. The "powder coat" of the bracket also started flaked off in big chips after about 8 months.
The next set I got is the current set I have installed. I relocated the mirrors to the windshield hinge, which solved the door slamming issue. However, as others have pointed out, vibration and oscillation is an issue. I also modified brackets off a Montero to mount the mirror to so they extend further from the tub so I can actually see the passenger mirror from the driver's side. These mirrors only have one set screw for mirror adjustment, but it must be designed better than the last set because they stay in place better. It may also just be because I relocated them off the doors.
All in all, if I could have a do over, I would do motorcycle mirrors like others have, modify CJ mirrors, or go with the convex mirrors attached to the rollbars, which I saw a couple days ago but cannot for the life of me remember what thread it was!
Thank you guys for all the input. My wife already bought some from Amazon last night, coolvue brand. We'll see how long they last and go from there.
