mini spool in an 8.8

Is anyone currently running a mini spool in an 8.8? if so, what do you think and do you think its a good modification? i drive about a thousand miles a year on my jeep. its pretty much seasonal. i wheel about once a month or so and i want something better than the limited slip in the rear without the price and the quirks. i'm also running 37" irok radials if that helps and i've got a dd.

Don't let any naysay'rs tell you different. I've had a spool in the rear of my dd for years and i love it. Very predictable, gnarly traction, and i haven't noticed any accellerated tire wear. Thousands of miles later and it's still the bomb. Best bang for the buck besides the actuall 8.8 itself.

I've read that a full spool is the hot ticket, and that a mini spool will explode in the rocks.

'89 YJ, 258 with 4.0L head, AX-15, 8.8 w/Detroit, HP30 w/TJ shafts & OX locker, 4.56, SYE, 4" springs, 9000E MM winch, 33" KM's and twin flashlights!

FYI, if you have the limited slip already, a mini spool may not fit in the LS carrier. I do know for a fact that most lunchbox lockers for the 8.8 will not fit in the LS carrier so you may need to change out to an open carrier to do a mini spool. that means you would also need to re- set up your ring and pinion.

Personally, I went with an ARB in my 8.8 and I would never use anything else. I LOVE it. complete traction with the flick of a switch, and an open diff for when I need to drive my YJ on the street. When i swap out my Dana 30 I'm going with an ARB up front too

For the limited mileage your traveling, run the spool.

Your limited slip differential sucks.

On a side note, I asked a question on another thread here last week. To run a full spool on an 8.8, you have to get rid of the c-clip axles. So, wouldn't it be the same for a mini spool? I know the differences between the two (full vs mini), but not sure if the mini would have the same issue with c-clip axles. Just something to question and potentially look out for.....

A spool is all well and good for a trail only rig, but if its street driven, i say go selectable that way you have the option.

Besides, if its true that you need to eliminate the C-clips to run a spool
Spool = $250
Open Carrier = ~ $90
Master Install Kit = ~$85
Superior Super 88 kit = $350 or so as I recall
Total to run a spool in an 8.8 = ~$775 and thats if you do the installation yourself as opposed to paying a shop to do it. Most shops will charge at least $300 bucks to do a gear set up in an axle

David at Northridge4x4 was having an introductory sale for the Super 88's for ~$530 including shipping. Not sure if they are available elsewhere for less.

You just got the 3 & 5 numbers mixed-up.

I havea mini spool in my 8.8. I DD mine on 33's, soon to be alot bigger. The mini spool will be fine but since your on 37's, I would reccomend a few things... Alloy shafts would be a good upgrade, and the limited slip carrier in the 8.8 is weaker than the open carrier. When you install the mini spool, you should shim the side lugs (the parts that spline to the axles, to make sure you have a snug fit for the center blocks. Be sure to shim each side equally so that the cross pin will still line up though.

If you decide to go with a full a spool you will need to get a clip eliminator kit. If you do, make sure that t will fit behind disc brakes, if you have them. As far as I know, Superior is the only one that has a kit that will fit under discs.

Atomicmoose, is correct. With full spool you need no other carrier, as the spool is the carrier. The ring gear bolts to the full spool. A mini spool is just inserted into the existing carrier.

If you need an open carrier let em know... I have a brand new one, still in the box sitting on my shelf.
