Max tire size on a stock YJ?
I saw it the first day I visited this forum... I can't find it now anywhere. I've searched about 20 times and can't find the max tire size for a stock YJ.
I just want to know if my stock setup will handle 31" tires that I can fit on stock rims? I found a set of nice tires for under $500 locally and wasn't sure if they'd fit. I don't want to spend the coins on tires if they aren't going to fit without buying a lift. Anyone know?

I believe what your looking for is in the FAQ section... though I was looking into this last year when I was getting new tires. I've heard a few guys say that they stuffed 31's on there stock rig if your springs are in good condition... mine were old so I just went with 30's... which I would have just got the 31's so I would have done my lift by now lol. I've also heard that some guys were getting tj flares and making them fit, or adding 1" shackles. but $500 is hard to pass up if its for all 4 I'd just get them anyway if they look good and if they don't quite fit... then its time for a lift :-) just don't tell your wife lmao

30x9.5 is about the largest you can fit on a stock YJ. With cut out fenders and TJ flares you can fit 31x10.5 tires (that's what I have right now).
As far as the rims, what kind are they? There were a few optional alloys. The standard 6 spoke steel wheels were 15x7. The really cheepie steel wheels on the bare bones Wrangler S were 15x6. Some of the alloys were 15x8, most were 15x7. 30x9.5s will fit on either. I think maybe you need 15x8s for the 31s. |

They are stock steels I know that. I believe they are 15x7's. But if I'm going to have to do any modifications as of yet, I'll just wait on the idea. They are 4 for $500 and they are 6 ply all seasons. They have an aggressive tread and don't look bad at all.
Ahh well, I guess the search for 30's in on! LOL Thanks guys! As for the wife... Believe this or not.. she WANTS bigger tires.. "It looks small with those tires!" LOL! Love her to death!

I ran 235x75s on my Wrangler for most of its life once the OEM Goodyears wore out. I think they come out to like 30x10 in inches. Depending on the brand they can look pretty big as far as stock size tires go. Come to think of it, that was on the stock steel wheels so maybe 31s would work on 15x7s.

I ran 31s on mine stock and I had saggy springs. I trimmed my flares to make sure I didn't get any rubbing, but they fit. Now I am happy that I did because I just lifted it and I would be mad if I had smaller tires. Mine are on stock wheels.

I have 31x10.50x15 on right now, stock suspension. Had to trim the flares so they wouldn't rub. I have stock gambler wheels and they hit the leaf springs at full lock. That's prob the biggest you can go with ripping the fender flares off

I trimmed about an inch off of my stock flares, have stock rims and I have 31's in there with no problem...just rub springs at full turn.

Running 31" BFGs and I rub the springs at lock, and I've bumped the flares when the springs compress all the way, or at weird downhill angles.

Thanks for the information everyone! Sounds good! After I figure out my diff problem I'll probably end up buying these tires! If I have to do some trimming, I will!

I ran BFG AT's 31x10.5 on my YJ for a while and the tires managed to trim the fender flairs for me.
My Dad has 95 Rio Grande too and he is running 31x10.5 goodyears and he had some tire rub until he added some Bestop fender 6" fender flairs. I say go for it. If you don't like the rub, you can switch to TJ flairs, wider flairs, a shackle lift or even a 1" body lift. Lots of options. But once you start you will never stop. |
