Max tire on 2.5l

I picked up a 95 YJ 2.5l 5sp with 107,000 miles yesterday. This is my 7th jeep. I've never had a 2.5l before. I could not pass it up as the jeep was in perfect condition. It may need a new clutch or possibly scyncro a will see..

I had a 02 TJ with 34's and never had any problems with it on the trail. ARe 33's or 34's too much for a 2.4l? What do you guys recommend as far as tire size and the 2.5l?

I run 33's with the 2.5 and stock gearing. It's fine in town and great offroad, but it's a dog on the highway.

If you regear you can get away with larger tires. A lot of folks like to run 35's with the 2.5, but I set my limit at 33's with the stock gearing (4.10).

My 2.5 performs very well offroad on 35" tires. Decent onroad with a regear.

What did you regear to? And how does it do on the highway with the 35's and a regear?

I run 4.56s. Average 16 to 17 mpg with a 65 mph cruise speed. Will cruise 70 but mpg's go to crap. Do not use 5th except on flat ground and downhill, but it works. I agree with ok4, dont think i would tr and DD bigger than 35" tires with a 2.5.

That's better MPG than I'm getting on 33's and 4.10's.

Does it pull well up hills at highway speeds? And does a headwind kill your momentum like it does with 4.10's?

I'd like to swap gears someday, but I haven't decided between 4.56 or 4.88 gearing yet.

Yeah head winds suck, but they suck for 4.0s too, its a box with wheels.. Otherwise it pulls ok. A 2.5 is never going to pull hard, LOL.I went with 4.56s because I already had a 9" ford geared to 4.56 for the rear. While there is not that much difference between the two ratios, with the 2.5 i would go as low as you can, aka 4.88.

33s is it. I ran them and then went to 30s because it was BAD on the highway(48 top speed) with the 30s it is more than tolerable. I want 31s now.

Wow I did not expect this much positive feed back. Looks like I have some things to think about. I'm not sure what to do.

WOW, something's not right if your top speed is 48. I've hit 88 on the highway before, but then I somehow ended up in 1985.

And when I was in the high 80's that was the uncorrected speed for those tires, so I was actually going faster than that. I wouldn't want to hold that speed for long in a lifted Jeep YJ though.

I run 33's and have no problems I am still on stock gears (4.10) with the rest of my family in the Jeep (about 400 extra pounds) 35mph is in 3rd but with just me it is 4th. I can keep 50 just fine in 5th and have no problem going 60mph if you go uphill you might have to shift to 4th but I have never had to drop more than one gear and even then I still keep speed just fine. Just remember that your spedomiter will be off by 15% so when it says 30 you are doing 35 and when it says 51 you are doing 60.

No way... So when my speedo said 88 I was going 101.2 MPH. I didn;t think a YJ could do that.

No wonder it felt like I was about to tear a hole through the space time continuum.
