that thing operates on some combination of time and/or miles. The time is under the dash usually just above the gas pedal and is a plastic box with what looks like clockwork gears in it. Unplug and toss in the trash.

Unless cali is anal about that, it is time to remove that little black box man. All it does is tell you when to go back to the dealership. Usually for emissions replacement. Not a big deal.

don't just toss it in the trash.

First smash it with a hammer and run over it several times, then toss it in the trash.

Fixed it for you...

Some states require all immision equipment to be intact for an inspection sticker. Check local laws for compliance requirements

If you look at the backside of the unit that GrimJeeper91 posted, you'll find a label that says "Made in Taiwan" or something like that. Peel the label back and there's an access slot to the gears. Look closely and you'll see a single spring loaded wire that's touching an electrical stud; that stud is connected to the wire which turns the maint light on.

Take a toothpick or small screw driver and move the spring loaded wire out the the edge of the white plastic gear nearby. You'll discover that it has a recessed track running around the outside edge which the wire will drop into. Leave the wire parked in that outside track. As the gears rotate, sooner or later (about 2750 hours or so) there will be a bump in the outside track which raises the wire and once again lets it slide into the electrical stud where you initially found it.

So it's just a way to sucker people into thinking their car needs work by the dealership?

My light has been on since August.

It's just a simple clock motor; it's only purpose is to signal when the O2 sensor should be replaced. I guess some engineer decided that 2750 hours was the magic time; curiously that works out to 82500 miles at an average speed of 30 mph although I'm completely uncertain if that means anything or not.

No, with 1991 and up, the maintenance timer is incorporated into the ECM. These years do not have the box under the dash like the '90 and earlier models do. In your case with the '92, remove the maintenance required bulb in the dash and be done with it.

You dont have to do that and you also don't need to go to dealerships to get it shut off. I looked at it on my lunch today at work and got it shut off. You can shut it off with a Snap On Modis scan tool. It tricks the emission system and resets it.
