Maintenance Req'd Light came on

Uh oh, is what I said comin' home tonight. It came on, I checked the oil, and its low. I have been meaning to change it anyways. If low enough, which it was REALLY LOW. Would that most likely be the cause of the light? Can't seem to find any other problems.

Did the light turn off when you added the oil?

Mine turned on out of the blue too...I was told it was a thing that the computer does every 20000 times you turn the ignition on. It dosen't mean anything is necisarily wrong, but Chrysler wants you to take it to the dealer anyway. Usually, they'll just replace the 02 sensor & maybe the catylitic converter...thats about it. However, taking it to the dealer is the only way to get the light turned off....& its re-damn-diculous too, my local dealer wanted $40 & 30 minutes of my life. I told the guy he was crazy & that I would just pull the bulb out.

The Maint. Req'd light is different than the Check Engine light. It's sole purpose is to tell you it's time to change the O2 sensor. Change it yourself, takes about 5 minutes, then take it to a dealer to reset the light. A good dealer will do this for free in the driveway, as it will only take a few seconds.

Why does every think it means change the O2 sensor? I have done this twice and neither time they changed the O2 sensor out.

It is a requirement by emsion laws that the O2 sensor be checked every so many miles, 70k is about the magic number but I am not sure. Dealer can check it, or any one with a diagnostic computer for Jeep vehicles. You can replace the O2 sensor, no biggie, hear they are cheap. Not needed most of the time.

The O2 sensor is on the front pipe right?

I don't like this idea that the light comes on every so many miles and needs to be reset by a dealer. Seems like its just another way to make $$. Its not fair. The Jeep is gettin' the oil changed right now, along with tranny and transfer case. Normally I'd do it myself, but we have these free oil change coupons we need to get rid of.

According to my repair guide, the light comes on every 82500 miles or so, so you shouldn't see it that often. It's just a mileage counter for a pre-determined number of miles that they think the O2 sensor should be replaced to maintain proper emissions. Some dealers with reset the light without showing proof of changing the sensor, mine made me show the receipt.

My maint. light came on just after I bought my Jeep. I was just starting to learn about working on my Jeep, and I took it to the dealer. They wanted $100 to replace it. (90 and earlier has to be replaced, can't be reset) I bought Chilton and found out what it was and took care of the problem myself. There's a little square smoke colored plastic box with some plastic gears in it attached to your firewall just above your gas pedal. That's the emis. maint. timer and that's the little jobby that turns your light on around 82500 miles. All that said, here are 3 simple steps to solving the problem. Remove 2 screws, unplug, and throw in garbage.

The Maint Required light, like most have said, is a light that comes on after a certain amount of miles is placed on the vehicle. If you take it to a dealer, they will tell you that the light indicates that the timer needs to be replaced along with the O2 Sensor. If you take your Jeep in for a emissions test, most places will fail the vehicle if that light is on as it is part of the Emissions Control System (ECS) that light must be off, (not covered by tape as they do check for that stuff) with my expierence doing Emissions Testing (I/M 240 Dyne Test) most jeeps should have the 02 Sensor replaced every 80-100K miles. on 95% of the fuel injected jeeps that failed the emissions test, when they came back after having a new 02 sensor installed they passed with flying colors. The 02 sensor in most cases is rather simple to install yourself, and getting the sensor at Checkers will only cost you $30-50 depending on what type of sensor you have.

Hope this helped,

Ryan
