I was told that light comes on ~80K miles and is a gimmick from the stealership. So you end up taking your car to them and having them look at it and charge you and arm and a leg for something really cheap. Mine is on and i don't even pay attention.
No way to turn it off unless you take it to them

Look under the dash down on the fire wall just to the right of the gas pedal. There is a small clear box mounted to the fire wall. Take it off or just unplug the wires going to it.
ALL THIS LIGHT IS USED FOR IS TO TELL YOU WHEN YOU NEED TO TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE THE EXAUST or some other stupid part and then pay $40 bones to have them "reset" it (wind it back/repace it)
Just remove it. Dont bother with the light. Also, I could be off on my years, I do not know when the took that little stupid box out.

The book (manual) indicates that it is timer, but was told that the dealer had to reset. I will look to see if I have one of those boxes, but don't think so since it is a 91 with 4.0L. I did remove the bulb, but would like to turn it off and return the bulb.
The "maintenance required" lamp is nothing more than a timer to indicate that the user should replace the O2 sensor. OBD1 equipped jeeps where set up to replace the O2 sensor on a timed PM rather then have them fail undetected. Just replace the O2 sensor and remove the lamp. Or replace the sensor and bring it into the stealership to reset the lamp. Your choice.
