Maint Reqd??

Does anyone know of a way to turn off the Maint Reqd Light on a 91 YJ, other than removing the bulb??
THanks

I was told that light comes on ~80K miles and is a gimmick from the stealership. So you end up taking your car to them and having them look at it and charge you and arm and a leg for something really cheap. Mine is on and i don't even pay attention.
No way to turn it off unless you take it to them

Look under the dash down on the fire wall just to the right of the gas pedal. There is a small clear box mounted to the fire wall. Take it off or just unplug the wires going to it.

ALL THIS LIGHT IS USED FOR IS TO TELL YOU WHEN YOU NEED TO TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE THE EXAUST or some other stupid part and then pay $40 bones to have them "reset" it (wind it back/repace it)

Just remove it. Dont bother with the light. Also, I could be off on my years, I do not know when the took that little stupid box out.

It's my understanding that this box (pictured below), isn't on the 91's. It wasn't on mine. I ended up pulling my bulb because when I checked the codes nothing out of the ordinary came up.

Correct.
This timer box gizmo was only used on the 6 cyl 4.2's which were only used thru model year 1990.

Got confused, so I deleted my previous post. My '93 doesn't have one, or if it does, the Jeep gods did me a favor and burned the bulb out for me already!

Ok so I was wrong, does the computer control the "maint" light after 91, or is there something else that is involved??

OP, what exactly is the problem with pulling the bulb???

The book (manual) indicates that it is timer, but was told that the dealer had to reset. I will look to see if I have one of those boxes, but don't think so since it is a 91 with 4.0L. I did remove the bulb, but would like to turn it off and return the bulb.

Yup - Starting in 1991 the Maint Reqd light is controlled by the ECM.

Any shop with a scanner can reset the light. If the shop has an OTC or Snap-on scanner that will work just fine. I used to charge a standard $25 to turn them off. I haven't seen one on in years.

The "maintenance required" lamp is nothing more than a timer to indicate that the user should replace the O2 sensor. OBD1 equipped jeeps where set up to replace the O2 sensor on a timed PM rather then have them fail undetected. Just replace the O2 sensor and remove the lamp. Or replace the sensor and bring it into the stealership to reset the lamp. Your choice.
