Lowering a Jeep

Soon I am going to go down to street tires - currently have 30.9 mud tires. Beside sucking gas, they make enuff noise to wake the dead. Not sure what I will replace them with, but it wont be too small or some silly dounut looking thing.

My question is that I am pretty sure the Jeep as about a 2" lift on it from the previous owner. Is there any reason why I should not lower it? Would it help/hurt stability to leave it up, any changes in MPG or any such thing? Or is just way too much trouble to try to take the lift off?

Thanks!

i know of a guy that has a TJ with a 6" long arm lift that runs stock 29"tires during the week and puts on his 35" Goodyear MT's on the weekend and he said other than looking funny it does not change the MPG's that much, there is an obvious areodinamics issue but with just 2in lift i dont think you would notice much diferance.

Why not just get some 30" Goodyear GSAs? They are found on stock TJs and are more of a street tire than an agressive tire like your current MTs. People are always selling 'em for cheap on the forums ... You could pick up a set with really low miles for a good deal if you keep your eye out.

That's prolly a good idea, thanks. I know I am not a "real" Jeep owner, since I mainly have mine for daily street use, but I figgure why suck up the extra gas & have the rukus if I don't need it. I did get an extra 2-3mpg when I jacked the tire pressure from 32 to 41, but now the CD player skips when I cross railroad tracks hehe

Yeah, if I were you, I would punch myself in the face, sell my jeep to someone who can appreciate it, and then buy a volvo stationwagon or something similar.

If you can't find a set of 30x9.5 GSAs cheap get a set of 235/75/15 they are a 29.5" tire and are skinnier than a 9.5 so you should get slightly better MPG...also clean everything up and give it a tune up. Just get more of a street tire than a mud tire.

On the contrary, Just because you don't wheel your Jeep, doesn't necessarily mean you're not a real Jeep owner. Don't let elitist jeep owners tell you that you have to wheel your Jeep to become a real Jeep owner. As long as you wave when you see another Jeep, you'll do fine!

Thanks for the tips!

And I agree with ya Saturdaynight. After not having a Jeep for 16 years, I am loving having one again, even if it is for just farting around town. Tho for the life of me, when I see people around town with the full steel doors and the hardtop on I am puzzled. It's Alabama, it's summer, why do you have that thing dressed up like an SUV

First thing I did when I got this Jeep last month was toss the soft top in the storage shed with the door's top halves, pop on the bikini top & stick the back & windjammer covers behind the tumble seat.

I may not have much inkling to spend a great deal of time rock hopping, but I'll be durned if I am gonna button the thing up tighter than my wife's Explorer. And as a bonus, it's a great baby-sitter. I can sit out in the front yard and drink beer while my 3 & 6 year old gilrs spend up to 2 hours just playing in the Jeep. Every day I get "Daddy, can we play in the Jeep?" They never asked that about my Ford Probe, go figgure!

Ghoat, yeah my Neices always bug me to drive them around with my top off. They love it! It's like a carnival ride to them.

Honestly though Jeeps were never intended to be fuel efficient vehicles, so I would sell it and buy an import. Terrible gas mileage and loud tires are all part of the Jeep experience IMO.

I agree, but there is no reason to have unneeded noise and burn extra gas for the hell of it - not when it's pushing $2.00 again. I am not looking to de-jeep here, but there not much logic to running larger MT's (looks aside) if you stay on the road 99% of the time. Heck, bumps & bruises are a part of playing football too, but that doesn't mean you play without pads.
