Loud squeeling

I have a loud squeeling noise coming from under the hood of my 1992 4 cyl YJ. The higher the rpm's the louder it is. It will go away for a while but after a few minutes the noise is back. The noise appears to be coming from the alternator, but i'm not sure. I sprayed the alternator and belt with super lube and the noise went away. After a few minutes the noise came back very faint and then continued to get louder. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

is it only after cold starts??
I have the same thing...it's the alternator belt...if it's old, then it probably needs replacing
Mine's old and shrunk a little, so I just need to get around to changing it

If its not the alternater. it is probably the starter. It happened to me and its an easy fix.

It happens after cold and hot starts. I'll try changing the belt and see if it makes a difference. Thanks for the input.

Most likely the belt. Mine was doing it also, but had 90,000 miles on it, so it was long overdue, as I was slowly peeling outer layers away, LOL

After you put your new one on, it will stretch after a few days. The following week, retighten it (if you have adjustment, it is on your idler pulley mounted to the power steering pump). If you simply have a pre-tensioned idler, there is no adjustment. Check your manual.

My belt broke, and I replaced it, THEN it started squealing, make sure your tention is tight enough. There are ajustments over on the driverside of the the belt path
