Gotta put the valve cover back on and fill it with Lucas/15w-40. Been busy at the rig.

Everything is back together, I have a extra qt of Lucas and 2 gal of 15w-40 oil for the ride home tomorrow. Wish me luck guys. I plan on stopping around every 50 miles to see how much it's using.

Whooo hooo, made it home. It took 3qts of Lucas and 2 gallons of 15w-40 to get it here, but its home.

Pulled the head off today, talk about a s#!t pile of build up- this is gonna be a project. Valve guide seals are really brittle and pulled right off with the springs. The cyl. walls have no scratches so that's a good thing. I think I'm gonna pull the block out and just do a rebuild. I have a 4.0 head, not sure if I want to put that on or not.
I took it off the road for the winter, at least this will give me time to get the 8.8 installed, sye in, and the solid axle shafts in. Also on the list is to clean the frame up and get it painted up.

Glad you made it.

On your next engine, consider Rotella as your oil. It cleans better than anything else available, and I have pulled down 100,000+ mile engines that ran exclusively on it and there was no crud caked anywhere.

Old4x- the build up wasn't sludge, it was all of the carbon build up on top of the pistons and valves. My apologies for not being more detailed.
My interweb access is through my iPhone or iPad, so posting pictures is something I haven't figured out how to do yet.

I'm staying positive: You have the knowledge and skill to rebuild it to like-new tolerances. Once done, you know you're all set for another 200k. Best of luck with the rebuild and I'm glad you made it back in one piece.

Engine is out and torn down-- things to do (as far as I can tell )

1. Clean and prep block for deglazing, really don't want to bore it
2. MUST order at the least new crank and connecting rod bearings ( lots of copper showing )
At least none of them spun or show any signs of hot spots
3. May just order a master rebuild kit, they're not very expensive
4. Clean up the engine bay, scrub it down, repaint, under coat, you know all that fun stuff
5. Source a ext. manifold, big crack in the old one ( never knew it though )

I have a friend with a 4bt, trying to persuade him to sell it, but he's not sure if he wants to let it go just yet.
In the mean time I'll be pulling the 35 and sticking in the 8.8, change the front axle ( finally getting rid of the 3.07's )
I can't wait to see how this thing runs with the 4.10's.

IT'S ALIVE----- been about 6 months since I started working on getting a different engine in. Sounds good, runs good, timing at 9* BTDC. Just in time for nice weather.
Gotta give it a bath, must be a 1/2" of dust on top------ I'm one happy guy.

What engine? rebuit yours or another one? Details, man, details.....we need them.

I found another 258 on craigslist. It was about an hr from the house. Price was a steal, so I wasn't going to say no. Some kid had it with the intention of putting it his yj- which he sold to some one else. His loss, my gain. It was rebuilt already, clean as a whistle, sounds good.
I have a d30 w/ 4:10 sitting in the garage, and the 8.8- all I have to do is go pick it up. They will be going in some time late summer. I can live with the 3:07 for a few more months. My wife said I had better have the Jeep running before nice weather rolled around. Imagine that, me being told to go and work on the Jeep, yes I'm keeping her and no no one can steal her.
My old 258 is in pieces in the garage, future plans are to bore it and install a 4.0 head. It will have a carb on it- cause I like them, I like to play and tinker. I plan on keeping it simple with the GM ICM too, thanks to Old4X for helping with this set up.
