A lot of blue smoke

I left work tonight and following me home, a huge cloud of blue smoke. Definitely burning oil, because when I did get home, no oil on the stick. I just topped it off 2 days ago and all was good.
Tonight I also noticed, while driving, a lot of predetonation under a load. That is a first and nothing has been changed, timing wise.
I pulled the plugs and each had a brownish scale on them. #3 seemed a little darker but wasnt bad. Tail pipe is completely black, also a first.
300 miles from the house, not good !!
Gonna pull the valve cover tomorrow and see if anything is out of wack.

sounds like you overfilled it or you have issues with your rings.

pulling the valve cover is a good idea, my 4.2 was so plugged up that the oil couldn't drain out of the head and would leak past the valve seals and smoke like a beotch. also, checking the oil right after running the motor would give a false low as the oil was trapped in the head.

Update- pulled the valve cover off tonight. Clean as a whistle. No build up of any kind. I'm gonna pull the head and take it home with me ( being I'm at the rig ). Gonna due the valve guide seals and have everything checked on it. When I return to it, maybe drop the oil pan and check the btm end.

If it were the valve seals wouldn't the blue smoke be gone in a matter of minutes shortly after driving? A compression check before you take the head off will take you if the rings are bad. Eyeballing them won't do any good.

UPDATE- well I'm back at work and the heep. Did a dry compression test tonight:
#1-145
#2-95
#3-135
#4-150
#5-125
#6-144
Also noticed #1 and #3 intake rockers are extremely loose- like the lifter didn't pump up. This is not what I wanted to find !
Kinda limited to what I can do, being 275 miles from the house. Any thoughts on how to get this thing home? I rode out here with my son so I don't have a vehicle to tow it home with.
It runs and drives, just smokes. One more little nugget, when I pulled the plugs not one seemed oil fouled or even close. All six were a nice brownish color.

275 miles of what type of terrain? Freeway? Steep hills and fire roads? If you can get to paved roads, I say go for it. Sounds like you need rings on at least 1 cyl. yet, its not my jeep.

@Lucca, 90% interstate to get home (I80, between Youngstown OH and Williamsport PA ).
@Old4x, there is no oil in or around the air cleaner.
At this moment I think I'll try and nurse it home, no other options. A tow bill from here would be out of the question.

If I were going to do this:

I would pick up a gallon or 2 of Lucas and a case or 2 of Rotella 15W-40.

Put 2+ qts of Lucas in and fill to full mark with Rotella. Stop and check every 50 miles. Adjust Lucas/oil mixture as you see fit.

You can also easily attach a tow bar to the front bumper if it is stock. 1/2" drill bit is all you need to fit the tow bar to the bumper. I got mine for $45, and it stays behind the seat.

I wouldn't mind towing it home, but my sons car is not up to the job !! Lol. He drives a 93 VW Cabriolet
I thought about the Lucas also, I'll have to find some Rotella. Will the 15-40 be heavy enough? Just a thought.

As long as you keep oil in it and they don't have blue smoke Police drive it home and figure it out. Kill some Mosquitos!!!!

A little heavier than 15W-40 can't hurt, but isn't commonly available. I use Lucas in my hi mile 4.2. My oil loss was RMS leak, and the Lucus has that under control.
