Got a question for you guys, my steering column has always been a little loose around the tilt part near the steering wheel. Tonight however I was moving it a bit and now there is a lot of slack in the same spot. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem or if anyone knows if there is a rebuild kit for it.
Is it the actual column, like when your are parked the whole wheel and column jiggle around, or is there alot of play in the steering wheel when you are driving?
We fixed the loose column thing on our Cherokee. Except for pulling the wheel and the anti-theft device it was pretty easy. We followed directions some guy had on line complete with step by step photos. Our cherokee wasn't exactly the same but it was enough to go by.
You say that the column is loose near the tilt part? If its in the tilt part, you shouldn't need a new column. I work in a garage, and that is very common (especially on gm's, and the YJ's column is almost identical to an S-10's). We called it "tilt-wheel blues." All it is are loose screws inside of the steering column. I did mine. Took less than an hour. You need a steering wheel puller, and a tool for the lock plate. Some parts stores even rent them. When you get inside to the screws, they are inverted torx. It's a little tricky to find the screws. If you're not sure if you can do it, an honest garage shouldn't charge you any more than one hours labor.
