Looking to get rid of my keys
I want to get rid of the keyed ignition switch and mount some type of toggle switch on the dash to start the heep. I am not worried about theft and just think it would be much, much cooler.
I have no issues diving into this but the electrical side of things intimidates me. Anyone ever done this or know of a link. All the links I searched on ignitions came up with problems and not this. Thanks, Joe

Yeah it can be done, you'll have to permanently unlock your steering wheel mechanism too. just figure out which wires go to ACC, IGN, RUN, & START and wire up your toggles and push button (or what ever way you're going to start it) maybe this link will help with the wiring: http://www.autozone.com/addVehicleId,1763902/initialAction,repairGuide/shopping/repairGuide.htm?pageId=0900c1528008ad56

I did this on my 93, and as mentioned, it's prety simple.
on mine, I just disconnected the factory ignition switch(on my 93, it was under the dash on the side of the colom), and attached the new wires there. that way, if you ever need to return it to stock, you can just plug it back in. to disable the wheel lock, if you key cylinder is worn like mine was, just put the key in, turn it to the on position, and then remove the key. otherwise, you'll need to pull the steering wheel and either modify the licking ring or the locking pin. here's a pic of my switch setup, one toggle is for the accesories, and the other is for the fuel pump and ignition, and the push button is for the starter. I also put in a hidden kill switch. ![]()

Great, I assume I am changing out the Ignition Switch in the diagram. Do you know where I can find this, is it in the steering column or under the dash.
Also, any ideas on how to unlock my wheel permanently? Thanks for the help.

this is how my YJ is. i bypassed the OEM ignition and run a master ON/OFF from the battery. when i turn on the power it go's to two toggle switchs one to turn the pump on and the other to make the coil hot. then i have a push button for the starter, works great. im trail only so yes any body can start it but its better than a key, jason.

I just think it is much cooler to do it this way. I want to find a few of the rocket switches and push button.
Plus I do not have to worry about loosing the keys. Although I do plan on hiding a master switch somewhere like muddy93 said.

I had something similar on my 1986 Toyota Pickup. Two switches for ignition, one for starter, one to disable clutch check, one for accessories, one for the tachometer light, one to flash the brake lights, one to flash the reverse lights, one to disable the brake lights, one for the stereo relay. It was rattle-canned flat black--perfect for late night recon work deep behind enemy lines.
The coolness factor alone was worth it. I loved locking the doors with it running and no key in the ignition. I could still lock the steering column if I wanted to. |

yep, as long as the hidden "kill switch" is turned "ON", all I have to do is flip the toggles, and hit the starter button.
