lifter ticking...I think???

so my jeep has developed this ticking that sounds like a lifter ticking....it seems to quit if I shut the jeep off and turn it back on, most of the time. I check the oil level and its good?? Do lifter develop a tick or go bad or is it maybe something else?? How can I check it??

Does the 4.0 have hydolic lifters? If so, the lifter could be stuck, causing the ticking. Its not too uncommon for a hyro lifter to get gunked up on its stem (where it extends) which will eventually develop a tick. They can be cleaned and reused if still in acceptable condition.

A cracked exhaust manifold can sound like a tick as well. But I have heard a lot of these 6's tick from lifters.

He's exactly right. My YJ developed a ticking sound and I thought my lifters were getting noisy. In the meantime I had to replace my exhaust manifold. When I put the new one on, the ticking stopped.

So...... it could be your lifters or it could be your manifold or it could be something else. Welcome to the world of Jeeps.

haha....the manifold is extremely cracked....just waiting on a guy to get back from his vacation to build my exhaust. I guess I will wait until I have the new exhaust in place before I worry about it. I have about 1500 miles on the oil change???? will probably change it this weekend just to be safe.

thanks
