leaking trans

hey i got a question... could too much gear oil in a trans cause it to leak.. might be a stupid question, i'm thinking yes but wanted to get a few opinions.

I went to check my trans fluid the other day because i noticed a "heavy" leak, by heavy i mean after sitting for 12 hours it may drop once or twice. so as i opened the check hole, maybe a quart of gear oil poored out the side... how it got that in there i don't really have a clue because i didn't fill it up last, it was proply one of my friends, goes to show you that you should never let anyone else fill fluid levels but yourself. but now that i did that and have waited for two days i now do not seen a single leak. has this ever happened before?
