leaf spring questions
hello everyone,
i have been into YJ's for a few years and most of the rigs i have ran have been SUA. recently i bought a YJ that had a SOA done already. i checked it over, everything has been done right on it, brake lines, SYE cv shaft, perches, shocks, steering, ect... the front has some pretty good articulation without swaybars and the front trac bar still on. however i cant get the rear to flex as much as the front. i took off the rear trac bar and it has helped a little bit but not as much as it should. it has 2 inch SOA liftsprings, it has a 4 leaf pack in the front and a 5 leaf pack in the rear, it sits up higher in the rear. nothing serious but you can tell by looking and riding, it is bouncy. since i will not be doing any hauling in it, what leaf can i take out of the rear,or what can i do to make it sit better?? i think its the load spring if im not mistaken. is it the smallest leaf in the pack?? any replies will be greatly appreciated. thanks i will post pics as soon as i can, im currently swapping my 8.8 in.

Do you know how long the springs have been on there and if it has been wheeled or not? What about your shocks are they long enough? Check your rear shackles are they hitting the cross member and what are they torqued to.
I would check these out before taking a leaf out. Do you know what brand of springs they are? You say they are SOA springs is the main eye reversed?

the rear shocks are as long as the front and i can stuff the fenders in the front.
i dont have any clue how old the springs are or trail use. i have been out 1 time with it, and i drive it when i can, ive put 1000 miles on it since october. im guessing the brand is skyjacker, since it has red bushings. the eyes are bent down a little bit only on 1 end of each spring and the end they are bent are mounted to the frame. i have 1 1/4 inch boomerangs and i have never tourqed them. would that be a problem?? it seems that something is not letting the rear give, i cant stuff the rear or even even come halfway. not quite. only one end is slightly bent down, and that end is on the frame mount.

Personally if it was me I would leave the springs as is for now.
Find a place, RTI ramp, fork truck engine hoist ect and flex it out in the rear. See what is limiting your flex. I would almost bet your shocks are too short, or too long.

i pulled up on a RTI ramp that my club has and i cant see any limits. the booms were not hitting the crossmember. and i cant tell about the shocks until i get my axle back in. that should be a day or 2. i will post up pics tommarrow of my rig as it is now. everyone i have talked to has told me to take the smallest leaf out bc it is just the load spring and if your not doing any hauling with it, then whats the point of having it, plus it should sit it better right?? thanks for the replies.

check the torque on the shackles. spec is 90 ft-lbs, but most guys I've known run closer to 50 after swapping the nuts out for some nylon lock nuts.

Run the shackle bolts to between 45-55 ft/lbs and your ride will be much nicer. Factory specs @ 90 ft/lbs make it stiff.
