Knifeboy YJ Build Thread

I should have started this a while back but I have only been doing a few things here and there to it. Up to date since I bought it I have done the following:

Timing chain
oil pan gasket
plugs
front and rear main seals
fan clutch
1/2" lift shackles front and rear (greaseable)
all shackle and leaf spring bushings (polyurethane)
new shocks
AC delete
replaced wiper switch and turn signal switch
head unit swap
front and rear bumpers

Coming up this weekend I'm swapping the engine and transmission with the 4.2L from my CJ7 (freshened it up and lubricated bearings first) and the T177 4spd which I'm adapting to the NP231. Once the engine is swapped I'm rebuilding the 4.2L from the YJ and then swapping them back at a later date and then rebuilding the CJ7 4.2L.

Future mods:

Custom CJ7 style dash with CJ7 style digital gauges
rewire entire Jeep with Painless Wiring 10106 kit
family roll cage
paint inside and out with bedliner
custom center console made with 50cal ammo can and Tuffy cam lock

One of the 2 MC2100 1.08 carbs I have rebuilt and this one is going into the YJ to replace the Holley 2BBL thats in there now.

The makings of the center console which will be done later

The engine from the CJ7 which I freshened up and going to swap into the YJ until I rebuild the YJ 4.2L and swap them back

Well I go the engine and trans dropped out of the Jeep. Didn't have anyone around to help so it took me a little bit to get it done, plus I took breaks to do just a little fishing in the backyard and caught a 2lb blue catfish.

Update on what I have achieved so far. Engine is in and plumbed up and wired up, grill is back on and wired up, and carb is in place. Still need to make a throttle cable adapter and finish the rebuild of the transmission and get all of that installed and bolt everything else up. Heres the pics.

Finally got the throttle cable bracket made and got the carburetor bolted down. What do yall think? All that I have left is bolt up clutch master/slave, finish trans rebuild, bolt up the flywheel, clutch kit, trans, transfer case, replace front driveshaft ujoints, and bolt up the driveshafts and finally the skid plate, and start it!!!

Got some more work done over the week. Got the transmission rebuilt and bolted up to the transfer case and got everything bolted to the engine. Still need to bolt in the transmission mount and skid plate. Had to order a new shifter for the transfer case but I placed my order with Novak shifter and should be here by Tuesday. After I got the transmission bolted up and starter installed I decided it was time to see if I could get her started and once I got the distributor clocked right she cranked up and sounded good!!!

I also decided to pop the cylinder head on my YJ engine that I pulled out and found about half of the valves leaking. Only did a couple of tests and aint checked anything else but I'll dive more into it this next week after the Jeep is driving again.

If you become a plastic surgeon then you can rebuild trannies, lol.

Thanks, it feels good every time I finish a project like this, and I'm almost finished, lol.

ITS ALIVE!!!! ITS ALIIIIIIIIIVVVVVEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! Got the Jeep started up and ran her for a bit while adjusting timing and fuel mixture. Have just a couple more things left to do before I drive it. One of which is get my clutch master cylinder exchanged since this one is defective. Still gotta run through my wiring and find a wire to hook up to the choke, need to modify my transmission skid plate for the mounting holes, and need to replace the u-joints in my front drive shaft. Also going to change the fluid in my transfer case.

Looking good man. I used to live right off of whitecap there on the island. Went to school in GP. I miss South Texas. You need to do a cruise down PINS when you get done.

Oh don't worry, I'll be going back down PINS for some more fishing in a month from now. Need to make sure nothing happens to the Jeep with the swap and conversion before I take any long drives to the middle of no where, lol.
