K&N Filters? improvement?

Ok i have 2 vehicles and want to add K&N air filters to both jeeps. Not the FIPK cold intake system, just the filter. do you think it's will be an improvement or just a waste of money?

i'm over these forums all the time and can't recall anybody ever talking about this

didnt feel a difference, not like you really would anyway. havent bought a filter since though and its been years. kinda fun reoiling it. its sorta a toss up for the price, you could buy alot of the regular filters and just replace them. to be honest buying jeep goodies is fun even if you dont really feel a difference.

I agree with all of this. I didn't notice a difference and I've had mine on for many years with good luck. Taking care of it is just part of the routine maintenence and Jeep presents ARE fun.

K&N filters shouldn't be used in dry, dusty environments. They allow larger particles to pass through, than an OEM filter will. Take that into consideration before purchasing one.

That's why you get a prefilter for the cone ones. You're right though....on a replacement for the OEM filter, they can lead to problems.

I run them on all my quads with pre fitlers for the sand dunes.

But unless your talking the FIPK I don't think it matters.

Fram filter is what 5.00 to 10.00 bucks each time you replace it.

K&N is 35.00 to 55.00 (depends on where the best deal is).

Ok now that is just the filter - now come the time to clean and re-oil the K&N depending on the kit you purchase your looking at around $9.99 for a recharge kit, is it worth it, I leave that upto you to decide.

My Opinion it's not worth it unless you are going the FIPK - cone filter - pre filter (well the cost is to much for the poer gain) or fabricate your own using some of the many different techniques posted on the net, then you will actually see a performance differnece.

I grabbed this off of Autozones www real fast, and there are others out there but I did not want to hit them all.

K&N 57-1521 $279.99 (FIPK)

You can sometimes squeze two uses out of the recharge kit, but as you can see you can save the hassle of washing the K&N with their soap, letting dry out, then spraying it with new oil, letting it setup a bit, or you can spend the 5-7 bucks each time pop out the old drop in the new and be on your way in 10 minutes.

Just some numbers for you to run thru your head.

there was an extensive comparison done on the oem, and k&n filters.
it was proven that the k&n will do more damage than good, and will not show any significant power changes alone.
i currently have a k&n filter on my jeep, and will be switching back to stock as soon as i have a moment to do so.
i'll see if i can find the testing data, and post it.

Thanks Nailer - I was just wondering if there were some hard numbers somewhere to compare against.

When you say stock do you mean FIPK (or similar) vs. Stock airbox?

I am debating on fabing my own FIPK style or just leaving well enough alone.

i had a K&n cone filter in my yj, and it defenatly made some differance. it worked fine for about a year, than when a took the filter of to clean it, i noticed dust particles in the airtube. it was not the filter itself that let them trough, but the rubber sealing did not seal that good anymore. i put the stock airbox back in, and i'm hoping it doesn't cause any damage to my engine.....
