Jeep wont idle at all?? whats wrong?

im looking to buy a jeep tomorrow. i was talking to the owner and its really hard starting sometimes and wont idle. when your driving its fine but just wont idle at all. sometimes you need to start it with starting fluid. what could be wrong with it? just dirty carb? maybe something major? he said driving it on the free way is good but around town you got to keep the idle up or else it will die and sometimes is hard to start back up.

could be idle screw to loose, dirty carb, your carb might even be bad as far as fuel delivery goes, id try cleaning it and tightening your idle screw

It would be helpful to know what year, engine, etc. Since you mentioned a carb I'll assume it's a '90 or older with a 4.2 I6 if that's the case, very frequently the venturi tubes in the stock Carter get clogged and cause idle issues. It's a pretty easy fix, but I'd use it as a BIG bargaining factor.
