where is it coming from?

could be the rollover valve, up inside the right rear fender

could be the gasket where the gauge sender goes into the top of the tank

or, could be any of the soft lines with a crack (or a hard line)

fuel system stretches across the entire truck ... so start at one end and work your way across.

mine was leaking at the point the fule lines attached to the throttle body (2.5 TBI unit) ...

Also check to see if your fuel evap canister is hooked up. If it is not, fuel vapors escape to atmosphere.

It is a good idea to fix it right away.

Is the gas odor coming from the front of your YJ or the rear?

My problem was one of my spark plug wires wasn't doing anything, so I had a 6 cylinder just getting gas but no ignition so that was my issue.

Mine was located on top of the tank, and would just puddle, making it nearly impossible to find without dropping the tank.

My jeep had a bad fuel odor outside, sometimes inside, and it turned out to be the gasket between the fuel tank and the fuel sending unit that is inside the tank. There was a factory recall on it back in the day. Some people have said the dealer will change it still but I went ahead and did it myself. The gasket is is $15. If it's strong in the rear this could very well be it. It's a known problem. You have to drop the tank and swap out the gasket. It's not a difficult task.

Push it outside.

open your doors to air it out a while.

then do the sniff test.

Feel around the cold motor and trace you fuel lines all the way back to your tank looking for wet fuel on your hands.
