I have no idea what it would take to do the swap but I have had this same idea. I just sold a 403 that was sitting in my barn on an engine stand for the past 5-6 yrs. I still have the turbo 400 tranny to boot. My buddy was trying to talk me into doing this combo. If you do this swap, good luck with it. I'll be curious as to how it works out for ya.

that 403 is an oldsmobile motor. they started puttin them in pontiacs in the 80's after they stopped making the original pontiac 400s in like 78 or 79. not a bad motor at all but for pontiac purists its a no-go...especially in the drag racing scene. it should be straight forward as far as mounting the V8 in the chassis as the pontac and chevy motors are very similar and its not uncommon to see a chevy motor in old firebirds and gto's......

I would say it's no different than any other swap...need a solid tranny and rear end. The 400 will annihilate the Dana 35.

I know about Pontiac Torque...

1964 389 GTO
1968 400 4spd GTO
1978 400 Trans Am
1979 400 4spd Trans Am

Oh yeah...wish I still had them all...lol

Yeah my bad.Lol. I forgot about the good ole olds. They made the 350,403,455 etc. right? Pontiac was the poor ole **** thought it was a cadillac right?Lol.:cheers 2: J/kiddin ya, ment no harm.

I know the 403 was an olds, but if your gonna put the pontiac in a jeep...then the pontiac purists doesn't really mean much..huh?

Have a good one bud.

Later.

The only thing about that would be the old original REAL pontiacs were all one block,no small blocks, everything from a 326 to a 455 was the same block, just different stroke and bore up to 1978.

On that note,,they are BIG engines,be like tryin to squeeze a big block 454 chevy in there.
I'm also a ole "yacker" from way back, used to race em at the drag strip because they made so much torque with little mods.

I use to own...
70 GTO all black in and out ram air III 400 auto
72 Lemans Sport 350 HO
69 Firebird ragtop ram air 400
and a boatload of 67-72 lemans gutted out for the drag strip, used to find junk safari station wagons and and bonnevilles and catalinas and rip out the 445's and beef up for the 1/4 mile in the lemans and gear em with 3:73's and tear up the dragstrip..lol

Love to see it done though....

The Poncho engine is kinda wide. You might wind up replacing spark plugs through the wheel openings. Not a big deal. I have worked on factory cars with the same issue.

Keep in mind that you will need a BOP trans, since a Chevy trans will not bolt up.

The distributor sticks up the back on the Pontiac, but that should be no different than the Chevy engine. Not sure if the Pontiac engine is taller than the chevy, though.

Might be a fun project, but I fear strenghening the drivetrain would result in quite a bit of expense that you will never get back.

a Pontiac turbo 400 CAN be made into a 4x4,seen them do it pretty easy on the show "Trucks" with a chevy turbo 400 and turbo 350,they just used a 4x4 trans donor to use the tailshaft and housing and swapped it to bolt up to the transfer case

of course i do its on the bird now. when i pull that 400 and put the 461 in it will have a lakewood blow proof on it. the bellhousing stays with the 400. dont know if i gots me the balls to do the swap. this poncho mill has less than 2k miles on it and would make that jeep a monster ! my wife would be PISSED i said when i sell that 400 i will take her to CABO. i changed my mind and want to put it in the jeep !
