Jeep Idle Issue Part II...
Hello once again, My jeep was recently giving me idling issues, coming to a stop & it would simply die, i did the venturi cleaning trick & it still did not help, now my question is, would a failing alternator cause idling issues? I am hearing this low "whining" sound coming from the engine bay around where the alternator is located. If not, what else could i check out? I really do appreciate all ideas, advice & help, thanks in advance,
John

Is the vacuum booster part of the brake booster or master cylinder?

HI John,
If you want good info don't expect us to read your mind. Be specific. What is your vehicle? Engine, year, transmission, carb or fuel injected, what you have already done towards your problem, your mechanical skills and understanding? Are there any prior symtoms? This is kind of like going to the doctor. Help us help you.
I'm not willing to give you anything based on what you have told us. I would be guessing and would probably be wrong.

What Karma (sparky) means is:
"I can't find that old post you're continuing here. So could you Run down, in detail, all the specifics of your setup and problem? thanks -sparky (Karma is a boomarang)"

first thing..... make sure your carb has the correct air / fuel mixture. If youre not sure, you can find instructions on how to do this from the maintenance manual.
second thing....are you sure your timing is set as per Jeep's instructions?
these two things you should make sure are correct before you start diagnosing other problems.
then make sure that your EGR isnt stuck open, and that no vaccum hoses are disconnected, broken, cracked, etc.
good luck bud

I did include what kind of jeep i have, year, etc. in my very first post in this thread i am pretty sure they did not have fuel injected wranglers in '87 i could be wrong. Anyways, it's a 1987 YJ Jeep Wrangler, Carburated, stock manual tranny, pretty stock in general. I am a pretty good mechanic as far as it goes, i do run into things i have not done before but they have not hindered me to progress forward. I have the know how & skills to do most jobs, i grew up with mechanics, my main base of knowledge mechanically is mostly vehicles 1950-1995, as the newer stuff is all computers & such... i have restored 2 Pre-73 Chevy Novas. Does this help?
Well i did the venturi cleaning method as i found out that most commonly, idle issues with these jeeps dwells with this issue, it did not help, the jeep ran great one day & the very next day i took it for a drive, came to a red light & noticed my jeep was dead, so it started right up, but ever since then it wants to die every time i come to a stop. It basically surges a little bit then dies, the idle goes real low (kind of struggling then KAPUT!) I do appreciate everyone taking the time to read this post & help me out here as this vehicle is my daily driver & where i live i will get raped in fees just have it looked at and/or fixed...

*UPDATE* I started the jeep up & it proceeded to surge then die, but i started it up again & it idled at about 13k RPM, i let idle like this for a few minutes but when i pressed the gas pedal it went back to idling really low then to sputtering/surging then it died. I checked all of my vacuum lines & they seem fine & where they are supposed to be. Any ideas? I hope this helps you guys determine what might the cause of all this...

Try this site. I followed the steps listed under "Idle Problems" and "The Sol-Vac & Idle Speed Adjustment" links and now it starts right up and I have rock solid idle. Now if I can only get rid of that spark knock!

same problem
it sounds like what is happening to my 1991. only im fuel injected. it just started happening. 6cyl, 5spd, mostly stock all around (for now). when im driving and i come toa stop, it dies. no fuss, the idle just drops and it goes off. i clutch, restart it and it runs wonderfully, until i stop. i liek to do most of my own work, but do not know where the source of this problem could be. i need s starting point. i replaced the fuel filter and that didnt do anything. any ideas for my fuel injected jeep?

Hmm...It sounds like you have clogged injectors to me, or they are bad or going south. Have you tried running any injector cleaner through your gas? Sort of like carb cleaner but for fuel injected vehicles, stuff you can buy at almost any auto parts store, if that does not change anything in the slightest, my deduction would be your injectors are bad...
Anyways, i figured out my issue, it was the carburator itself! I bought a rebuild kit & just had my way with the damn thing. I took pictures of everything, tagged everything, then put her back together! VOILA! The jeep runs smoothly again! I do really appreciate everyone's help advice, etc. THANKS! I look forward to more advice & helping others out in the future!
No my question was, would not having the choke plate on the carb cause any major issues ?
