jeep dies after 10 to 20 minutes of driving

this is a 89'yj w/a 4.0 block and 4.2 head. it has the motorcraft 2100 carb on it.

she runs great except it keeps cutting off like its starving for gas.leave it sit a few minutes and it will start back up and run.
the motor has been nutter bypassed
its driving me crazy.

here is what i replaced so far;
fuel pump
ignition switch
fuel filter
rubber gas lines
new electric choke

the vacuum lines r good/has correct timing.

i had a problem with the choke a while back and put a new one on.
i wonder if the ignition module is heating up and shutting down or the problem is in the distributor.or maybe the choke is closing when it warms up.

has anyone experienced the same problem.
any help would be appreciated as this is driving me nuts.
other than her cutting off she runs great
thanks
kenny
like i said u leave it sit for 5 minutes and it will start back up.
when it dies it sounds like its running out of gas.

I was just about to post it. Yep, it sounds like the ICM. Post back and good luck.

The coil itself could be getting to hot causing the same affect as if the jeep was starving for fuel

have not bought the ignition module.
went down the road and it cut off.
checked the carb and no gas.
i think my fuel pump is shutting down when it gets hot.
got warranty with it so it won't cost me nothing except time in labor.

97 buggy yes i swapped coils as well and it still died ,so i eliminated the coil as the problem.
bypassed the ignition switch as well ,so thats not the problem either

Did you clean the tank out when you replaced the fuel pump? The reason I ask is that mine was doing the same thing. The fuel pump had been replaced about a year and a half before. The guy that did it used silicone to seal the gasket. Turned into jelly and would get sucked up to my filter causing fuel flow to be cutoff. Look for trash in the tank if you drop it. Good luck.

thanks jcmoorre.
i have the pump out now, going to get another pump tomorrow.
it had water in the tank a while back and i had a friend clean it out.
i will put gas into gas cans and clean the tank the best i can.
there was no blockage on the pump screen.

thanks for all your inputs.
i hope this is the problem cause this is my wifes jeep.
she's been on my a$$ to get it fixed.

jeep dies after 10 to 20 minutes of driving

Been having the same exact issue you described above. Jeep starts, and idles. It will even drive... for qbout 15 to 20 minutes. Then, all of a sudden it will shut off when it gets to full operating temp. Runs great other than that. So far I have changed the spark plugs, wires, coil, and thermostat (thought old thermostat stuck close a few times). Also, took carb apart and cleaned it; noticed it was not "spraying" fuel when accelerator was pressed. It was only dripping out. I will try the fuel pump next. Or, maybe will wait to hear a report back from you.

Okay, just went outside to check some things... disconnected fuel line in front of the carb. When I attempted to crank fuel shot out everywhere. So fuel pump good.
Which brings me to something I did not share initially because I did not think it was an issue until today. I noticed that there was something (possibly gas) run down the side of the carb on the accelerator linkage side. Thought it might have been the morning dew. Then noticed it a second time.. only it wasn't early in the morning. Well, yesterday I purchased a carb rebuild kit. After looking at the new gaskets in the kit I came to a conclusion that my gasket is crap. On that same side the gasket is swollen, and deformed; being squeezed out from between the two surfaces. I am going to give the carb a general cleaning, check the floats, and put the gasket on to see what I got. I am thinking I should be good. Carb was just rebuilt about 12-18 months ago. Worse case scenario I will be rebuilding it. Will post pics of gasket, and update the status. Thanks for the info.

Wow sounds like the same thing my 4.2 had for 4 months. I ended up giving the whole ignition system new everything and then noticed a broken wire on the resistor on the firewall, after soldering it back together haven't had a problem since

Just wanted to update everyone ... I am back on the road again. I had to to rebuild the carb. It turned out to be a bad gasket that was leaking fuel/ air. This was my first time rebuilding a carb. If you give yourself plenty of work space, and keep track of your parts you can do it too. I also drilled out the tubes in the venturi to .032in. This should keep me flowing clog free longer. I think I am going to start running a fuel injection cleaner thru my system more often. I was shocked at how clogged the carb was after having been cleaned and rebuilt awhile back.

Jeep has been running good since carb rebuild. I have to admit since moving to Atlanta from Newport News, VA I am noticing how crappy my gas mileage really is. Everything in Newport News is within a 5-15mi. radius of where I used to live. Not the case in Atlanta.

With that said, I ordered a new HEI distributor, wires, and carb. I got the distributor. Just waiting for the rest of the parts. Will update once swap is in place.
