internal to external slave swap.

so my trans is just plain old tired. I managed to be lucky enough to have a buddy with an ax15 from a cherokee sport laying around he was willing to part with. i have a 90 yj, and want to be able to utilize the external slave set up on the new trans. I've heard that i will need to change out my master cylinder because it does not support the external slave, only internal. I'm not quite sure my i would have to do this, so could some one explain it to me, also, what else would i have to do to make the swap work? thanks.

I just completed the swap on my 91 and I was able to re-use my master (mine had the roll pin to push out to change the tube) I did need the external slave tube but otherwise it was good to go.

My 92 used the same master after the swap. Like Fuzzy said, just change out the tube.

May I ask what slave you guys are using?? ^^^^ I have a 1990 as well, when I did the swap I used a '95 ax15 already setup for a external. Then I ordered a clutch for a 1995 yj and a master/slave. Actually you can't just buy a slave and master for '95 or newer its a pre-bled unit sold together( that's what auto parts guy told me).
You will also need a new pilot bushing, just tell the auto parts guy you need part# 14674.

No '92 still had the internal slave, you need one from '94 or newer, but like I mentioned earlier I didn't think you could buy just the slave. I had to buy pre-bled master/slave combo.

alright, so a master/slave combo from 94+, is it a direct bolt in to older year yj's? or is there "some modification required"?

I just wrote you a long reply then my phone app crashed argh!!

You will have to modify the master cylinder. The bolt pattern is different on the older YJ at the firewall. You will have to either drill the master to fit or the firewall. Then the hole where it connects to the pedal is to small so it will need drilled bigger for the pedal assembly to fit through it. Other than the pilot bushing I mentioned earlier its a fairly simple swap.

alright, that doesn't seem too bad. is it that the holes are close but line up all the way or are they totally off?

You can buy them separate. I believe I got my slave from rockauto.

i called all my local parts stores and got quotes for the parts separately and it ended up costing something like 100$ more than just buying the three as a whole.

If your current master cylinder is still good (and OEM) you may want to save that. I have not had the best luck with aftermarket master cylinders, they seem to fail more often for me. (and the OEM replacement is expensive)
