last summer I had to fold down my windshield to get to my wiper motor for repair. Well last weekend we got a lot of rain here in SAc. and i had a lot of water coming in through the dash just above the speakers on the left and right side. i was told that I have to replace the foam/rubber piece ($95) that is between the windshield frame and the dashboard.
My question is....has anyone done this before or is it something that the dealer should do? Also if you have replaced this piece what kind of sealent did you use.
P.S. the rreason I was told I should replace it is because the old one has a memory to it and it is never going to sit right again.
I have replaced it and there is nothing to it. It is rubber not foam and if you can fold down the windshield then you have done the hardest part. There might be some rust from the water depending how long it has been seeping in but from what you said it shouldn't be that bad at all. You shouldn't need any sealent.
I bought an aftermarket cowl rubber from 4WD. It came folded and was not resilient enough to return to it's proper shape. I tried the sealer, but just made a mess. I wound up paying a body shop to seal the thing down. But maybe I'm just too fussy.
My Jeep leaks no matter what I do. Does anybody's Jeep not leak?
Mine use to leak till I blew my $350.00 CD player from water damage/corrison. Take a tube of sealent with the nozzel pices and put it on the dash (with the wind shield down) then put the rubber piece on and the a good layer on the top. Smoosh. Then take a paper towel and wipe access so that it evenly coats the out side. of the rubber piece, top and bottem. you might have to add a little extra on the outside.
Since I have replaced mine my Jeep has not leaked and I did not use any sealent. When I took the old one out you could see how old it was. It felt more like foam than rubber and was actually soaked with water even though it rained a few days before. I got mine from the dealership, it is alot more but sometimes you just don't want to mess with aftermarket stuff. From my experience the aftermarket stuff doesn't always fit properly.
Hi spgsig your might want to check out some of the sites that allow you to put in the part number which is 55175778 and see what kind of price you can get on it. I was looking and yes they are expensive. The cheapest price I can sell it for is 67.00 my email is lennyd96@aol.com if you need to get intouch with me.
Thanks
Lenny
I just replaced mine (as well as the windshield frame) this weekend. About 7 screws (philips) make sure you have a torx socket for the roll bar & windshield lock downs. I didn't use any gasket seal. Took it to the car wash & no leaks. In my experience with after market and windshield gaskets on a 74CJ go with the factory gasket. More ching but worth it!
