Input on a used soft top? should i get?

Hi, I am new to the forum, so this would be my first thread.
Anyway, When I got my jeep, it only came with the hardtop. it is now spring, nearing summer, and I want a soft top. now, the soft top will only be used for when it rains, because i plan to drive topless when it is nice out. with that, I went looking on craigslist for places near that had used soft tops, since i did not want to may $500+ for a top that is only going to be used during the rain. while searching, I found this one.

http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/pts/3809865869.html
i
t is a best top supertop, used, and according to the guy is functions well and is in good condition. all the hardware is there except for the windshield brackets which only cost $12.00. In a picture, the guy is pointing to a slight tear in the top. he says it does not really leak through it though. the question is: should I buy this soft top? the guy is asking $300 firm.do you think i will get my moneys worth? will it leak through the tear? another thing is that the guy selling is about an hour and 30 mins away from me. that is quite a trip, and i want to make sure i do not waste my time or money. should i just save the $500 and get a softopper like i wanted do? the frame soft tops seem very complicated to me over the frameless one, though that may be because I am a complete newby. I am a newby, but I am obsessed with my jeep. if anyone on here is selling a softop pretty cheap, and is willing to ship, let me know. need all the hardware, and i am looking to spend under $300 for a used soft top.
Thanks for reading and for any input!
p.s if i broke any forum rules, my apologies, i am unaware of the rules right now.

I went through a number of soft tops when I had my tj. You get what you pay for. Every top will stretch differently on your jeep depending on cloth, style, clean dirty, heat. Mixing an matching peices from different tops don't always work very well if at all for that reason. Buying a used top is do able if you are carefull. Try out the zippers make sure they work right. Check seams for busted threads that will leak. Mounting hard wear should be good and staight. Check all mount points for stripped threads. Windows should be clear not scratched and hazy. I had small tears on some of my tops that never came to anything or leak. If you put your top down and it freezes (colorado) your top won't stretch right and it will rip wide open. I wouldn't pay 300 for a used top thats missing anything.

300 with upper doors and no rips is OK. Rips and no doors, pass.

I run nothing some years and just a bikini top some years. This year will be no top, just lower half doors.

it is missing the a cheap pair of brackets. the guy agreed to install it on my car as a demonstration, as well as show me how to take it and so on. he said that not having the brackets should not interfere with the demonstration... i did not want to buy the brackets and later decide that I do not want to purchase the top from him. I am very skeptical towards buying a used one. I bombarded the guy with questions and requests. I may just save up for the softtopper, since i am aware that you do get what you pay for. $500 is just a big chunk of my pay checks from work, but i guess it will be a good investment.

It has a slight rip and comes with no doors, but I do not really need any soft uppers or anything right now. i have my full steel doors, and doorless is pretty fun too. Half doors are neat, but I do not see the difference between having half doors and full steal doors, so I half doors are in much of my interest. I guess the top in the link may not be worth it, huh. I am considering passing. seems too risky to buy used. and originally i did not want a soft top, I prefer to go topless and doorless, but the weather is unpredictable in New England. rains appears from no where, and I do not know what else to buy other than a soft top to cover myself and the interior of the jeep up from rain.

I just bought a new OEM replacement top w/ uppers from Smittybuilt on eBay. Got it on sale for $212 shipped. I already had the hardware though...top looks great and fits very well.

From what I see in the picture you are only buying the frame. The top in the picture has had its life. When the threads go the top is useless and it appears that the threads or stitching is going on the top.

I do have a question though? What is that $12.00 part for? I do not see it on my top.

yea, i am not getting it.. i will most likely just buy a softopper. probably some time next week. the $12 part are windshield brackets.... I have no idea how crucial they are, for I do not know much about soft tops. do you have a besttop super top? that is the kind that the guy is selling.

We ALWAYS like pics. Always.

The $12 brackets are important. The ad is deleted now but I know what you're talking about. They hold the horizontal bars aligned so your soft-top has something to wrap around on the sides, allowing your doors to at least try to seal up It won't work without them.

But I didn't. I Didn't want a hassle later down the road from a used soft top.
