I'm runnin 3.07s and 33"

So the title says it, my Jeeps a dog! 5th gear is pretty much useless but everywhere else the Jeep seems to do fine. I'm planning on upgrading to 35" soon and was gonna go with a ford 8.8 with 4.10s and swap a dana 30 with 4.10s. Is this set up gonna be pretty decent for a DD that likes to hit the mud? When I bought the Jeep, it had 31"s on it so I never really felt what it was like with the stock (29"s ??) tires. I've been doing some calculations and I figured that with even 4.10s and 35"s, it would be geared lower (crawling) than the stock 29"s and 3.07. Let me know what you think.

When I bought mine, that's what it had - 33s/3.07s.
I put 4.10s in it cause I got a good deal on an axle,
but I wish I had gone lower - at 65 MPH, I am only
turning about 1900 - 2000 RPMs.
For 35s, I would get AT LEAST 4.56, probably 4.88
would be better, but yes, the 4.10s will work, but 'not great

I am running 4.56's with my 33" Xterrains, wouldn't want any higher gears. If I were planning on going to 35's, I would have gone with 4.88's. I, like you, ran 3.07's for a couple of years with the 33's, can't believe my clutch lasted through that, 5th was for down hill only. I love the setup I have now, works great on and off road.

I second that. 4.56 minimum, but 4.88 would be better.

I have 4.88 with my 36" IROK's. It seem just right.

Yep, I have 4.11s with my 33s and it's just not enough. I got a great deal on an axle also. 4.56s would probably be perfect, lower for 35's.

I have 3.73' with 31X10.50's and I dont really have any problems with hills, even in 5th. Just downshift if your haveing problems.

Now back to the topic. DANG I was running the stock 3.07's and 30in tires and thought it was bad enough. 5th was for 70mph and faster. I regeared to 3.73's (cause thats what my 8.8 had in it) and uped to 31's and man it runs so mutch better. But like every one else, if your gonna run 35's go with 4.56's at a minamum.

I am running 8.8 with 4:10 gears in my 4.0 5 speed with 33" xterrains. This is barely acceptable. I wish I had 4.56. Driving with 3.07 gears and big tires is a joke. It is not fun at all. Also with 35s your brakes will be marginal at best. I could not beleive how much braking I lost just going to 33s.
