I'm guessing its a bearing, but I can't find it on morris 4x4. Anyone know what it's called. The steering box is at the other end of that rod on the left and after the knuckle the right shaft goes to the steering wheel.

I just went through this replacement recently. The writeup is nice if you can get your gearbox unbolted from the frame. My '92 was too rusted to move those bolts. Also my steering shaft was too rusted at the collapse section to move it down that way. I ended up having to unbolt the top knuckle and pull it out through the upper steering column. I can give you instructions if you have to go that route.

Thanks for the replies all.
One question: in my vid on the short shaft to the steering wheel - that lip on the shaft - is it whats left of the bearing? If not how do i get the new bearing on there?

I am about 99% certain that is part of the old bearing/bearing housing. Should come apart fairly easily once you tear down.

Well I don't really steer it at the moment - I kinda aim it in the general direction.

Before I fixed mine it was like driving a school bus on open gravel. There was a lot of praying on the highway.

Looks like I'm in the same boat as WhiteYJLA - my bolts are too rusted on the box and the sliding part is stuck solid. Anyone got any ideas?

Well, I snapped two bolts off the pump so it's now running with half of them - and the PO welded the bracket to the body so it looks like I'm going to have to cut the bracket off and remove (snap) the other two bolts and replace them anyway. So I'm going to get a new telescopic rod while I've got the pump off and grease the hell out of it. Just for the hell of it I'm going to take off the steering wheel and whatever is under it and do the top bearing too. Then I can replace the wiper stalk that the PO broke and fix the turn signal cancel thats broken too.
