Ignition problem

hey,

I have i 1989 jeep yj that i recently bought. it was running fine when i got it but now i am having some problems. the first sign of the problem was when i was cruising the engine would shut off momentarily then come back on in a bitt. this adventively kept on getting worse to the point the jeep won't even start. now i am not getting any ignition at all. i replace the wires, plug, cap, rotor, ignition coil and the pick up for the distributor. (which are all from a 1985 ford f150 inline 6 4.9 L for some reason). Does any buddy know were to go from there?

thanks

landon

check the carburetor, it might me gummed up with some residue. Take it off and clean it up.

Might have a bad ignition box. On the 4.2 6 cylinder it is located on the driver's side fender under the coolant reserve. (i think) I don't know how to test and see if its bad as I replaced my entire ignition system with a gm HEI. I do seem to remember that the ignition box is prone to failure. I am sure someone who actually KNOWS will follow up.

The Ignition Control Module is located under the washer fluid bottle on the driver side inner fender. That's where I'd start.

How do your battery cables look?

take your spark plug cable out and stick a screwdriver in the boot and see if a spark arcs when you crank it over. If it does then you know everything before the spark plugs is ok and the spark plugs are bad. If it doesn't arc that means your not getting any power to the cables or before them. Keep troble shooting and work your way back to find the problem.
