Ignition gear/key thingy

Hi guys, I need some advice and help. When I bought it 2 years ago the lock cylinder would spin without the key. I jumped in yesterday and reflexively just turned the cylinder and I felt something snap. After that spinning the ignition cylinder had no effect. When I took apart the column I kept looking for the "key" gear do-hickey (see pic). Unfortunately half of it was still inside the column, the other half (or so) I found in the housing I had taken off.

So does anyone know the proper name of this piece? A part # would be much appreciated. This is my DD so I got to get the part in by this weekend for work next week.

Thanks in advance!

Garage
They call it "Rack"

If you have trouble finding it keep in mind that the entire steering column is straight out of a checy S-10 so search under that as well.

Or, junkyard

I ripped mine out, capped the hole for the lock cylinder, and mounted a push button start with two toggles for ignition/accessory.

Never looked back.

Yea I figured this would require some imagination if I was not willing to pull apart a GM column in a junkyard. The black stuff in the picture is my attempt to steel epoxy it back together. That was an epic failure. I think I may go the same way as you hypernoodle. Thanks for the info!

So my friend Google found me what I need, and believe it or not, at autozone. I was re-reading JBolty's suggestion and looked up GM ignition rack instead and found it. Here is a link
