Idler pulley necessary?

I have a 92 wrangler with the 4.0. No A/C with PS. The bearing on my idler pulley is starting to make noise. My question is, is the idler pulley even necessary? It seems to me with the adjustment on the power steering that the little bit of slack that would be caused by by deleting the idler pulley could be taken out by that adjustment that's on the power steering. I looked and the belt would not be in danger of coming in contact with anything because of deleting the pulley either.

I guess my question is what is the purpose of this pulley? Is the pulley necessary? Does it take tension off the other components? Or can i just take it off and take the slack out?

The only way to find out is take it out and try it. If its too long, get a shorter one at the local auto parts place by bringing in your current and yelling the how much shorter you want

hahaha. Well I've actually already took the pulley off and tightened the belt up to check it out and it looks fine and gets as tight as it needs to be. I guess i just want to make sure that it wont put anymore stress on any of the other components without the idler pulley.

It'll be fine as long as the belt still has correct tension and everthing is still rotating same direction as before..
