I lost 5th gear in my AX-5

Was working fine and then the next time I shifted to 5th I got nothing, just winds out like I'm in Neutral.
All other gears work fine and there was no noise or vibration at all.
Anybody have any ideas??? or experience?
I have broken the input shaft twice before so I know it is not that.
with that you get vibes and noise in all but 4th,

Broken 5th gear snap ring.
When the snap ring breaks it allows the mainshaft 5th gear to slide back and not mesh with the countershaft 5th gear.
It happened to me not long ago and the snap ring is cheap but you have to get inside the trans to fix it.
It can be done without pulling the trans if you use a little ingenuity.

Thanks Pat8942, I appreciate the advice.
How can you get into it without pulling the tranny???????

Also...do you all think it is safe to drive it and not do any further damage?
I imagine this broken gear flying around in there, but as I said it makes no noise or vibes at all.
seems normal except no 5th gear

I drove mine for about a month before I fixed it and no damage was done.
The gear just sits on the shaft and doesn't get close to anything.
I must admit I hated driving with it like that but no harm was done.
What I did was pull the skid plate, shift housing and t-case and removed the rear seal in the tranny and tapped the gear back in place.
Than I took a magnet and held the ring in place and with a long flat blade screwdriver wedged against the ring and the trans case I just turned the screwdriver and it pushed the snap ring into the groove.
It was much easier than pulling the trans and tearing it down.
Be sure to use your magnet to remove the broken snap ring from the bottom of the case.

Thank you very much Pat, for all of this good info.
I feel a little better now.
It's not my daily driver anymore, but I do love to take it in the evenings and weekends,

I have had a couple of people ask me about this so here it is.
Whether you rebuild the tranny or have someone do it for you make sure you get the snap ring collar. Its a collar that fits behind the c-clip so there is not as much strain and a "backup". Not an original part so you wont find in a part breakdown. Some rebuild kits come with it. Try Consolidated Transmission Parts Inc. 2850 West Airport Boulevard Sanford, Florida, 32771 Phone: (407)321-2055 When I was shopping they said they had the patent on the collar. If they dont you can check with Man-Trans in Tallahassee, FL they sell their rebuilts with it installed. If it comes with it its "cheap insurance".

Just ordered today I am going to install these parts on Thursday,
(fyrdriver) Guess that I will have to pull the back half of the tranny to install the collar huh? Or will it just slide up the shaft and be able to squezze it in place?

He's new, give him a break. To the OP, you will have to pull the back half. See This Link for pretty much all the info you will need. Good luck.

Yes I just had to to this a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately I didn't have the time to order the collar. It's a pretty easy fix, just time consuming.
