i looked at the tj one, but the hoses are different sizes, and i need an easy project, for a change.......
so maybe i'll get a s/steel surround for the yj, and use the yj junk on the side....
will have a look into it anyways.....
but i'd still do all the trial and error for your tj filler neck for ye.....just an offer..

Same problem here. I found that Getty gas pumps nozzles usually work without shutting off early. I also found a license plate bracklet hold down plate from Quadratec. Goes for about $30. It's spring loaded and keeps the plate down while pumping.

Trial and error and gas spilling all over me has led to this method.

Insert gas nozzle with handle at about the 4 to 4:30 position.
slowly move clockwise and apply some pressure.
About the 5:30 position you will feel the nozzle slip in about a half inch to inch more.
Stop turning at approx. 5:45, and not past 6, The handle holds the plate down and the nozzle stays in the neck, and shuts off without jumping out of the filler neck.

Hope this works for you, has worked for me for 9 months now.

the amazing thing to me is that, I was SOOO hesitant to start this thread, I figured I'd get flamed right away! you guys are great I'm quite the tinkererererer and DEFINATELY plan on a fix, I was just hoping the legwork had already been done. My mission, (and I've already chose to accept it!) is to find a cheap DIY fix. May not be pretty, and may not be real soon (if ya'll only knew my schedule!) I'm thinking it has to be something to do with the angle the filler neck takes from the open end to the tank. too horizontal, topo sharpof a bend somewhere, something...I have a 88 CRX I'm parting out, and it never gave problems, since its stripped, I'm gonna study the entry angles and slopes, pipe sizes etc...we'll get back to you soon with more details!!!(o.k. who knows where that phrase came from!!)

I know different states have different requirements for the pump rates of fuel pumps. It is measured in gallons per minute and in my old job, I had to test pumps monthly and make sure they were within state regs. Some stations purposely keep their flow rates lower than the max to allow for a greater inspection tolerance. To me, that explains why some stations allow me to "lock and load" while others make my hand cramp from trying to hold the trigger in just the right spot.

I hate the license plate holder on the YJ and have been wondering about relocating it to the spare tire but I'm not sure if I like that look or not.

I posted this once before in another thread:

First off let me state that I have a degree in Chemistry from PSU and my senior year I concentrated my technical options in fuel science. I'm currently a Chem grad student at Bloomsburg University. So I'm not just telling you this that I heard from a friend of a friend of a friend.

Putting 92 grade fuel in your tank on a Jeep is useless. It calls for 87, so just give it 87. You're just throwing money away. And, a little known fact, the lower grade fuel you can use, the better gas mileage you actually get.

Now here is my main point, which I wrote my semester-ending research project report on:
You can put 87 ml of pure acetone for every 10 gallon of gasoline you add to your tank. (Plus it will clean your injectors.) Acetone has a lower flash point, which means its easier to ignite by your spark... which in turns provides good combustion. Acetone will provide smoother start ups in cold winter conditions as well.

If you read the ingredients on the back of an injector cleaner bottle, you will notice that many brands use acetone as an ingredient.

Acetone, as you may know, is corrosive. So you don't wanna get that on your paint when pouring it in. A looooong funnel is a good idea.

Now, getting 100% grade acetone is expensive. The kind I'm talking about is what you would find inside a clean chemistry lab, which is close to $60 a bottle. But the "pure" acetone you find on the shelf at WalMart is pretty much pure, and is only $6 last time I bought a bottle. Technically its 97% pure. But we're talking about parts per million, so the 3% is negligable.

The End.

WOW.....
i removed my license plate and relocated it to the center of my tail gate and put a slight angle on the nozzle with putting it in about half way works for me... it even stays there

edit: speaking of gas i barely made it home today, she started sputtering about 2 miles from home and died when i pulled in the driveway

I used to work at a marina, and we had the same problem with boats. If you turn the handle a bit, either direction, you should be able to go full blast. I have not had any issues with my YJ, but then again, when I am gassing up, it twists around too. Just my two cents on the matter
