I finally found my motivation

Back in the early 90's i sold my jeep (mostly stock CJ3B) and went back to my first love, building old trucks. In early '04 my buddy bought a new TJ and talked me into taking a couple of off roading trips with him. I had forgotten how much fun 4 wheeling was. 'Specially after a trip to Panamint.

In August of 2005 i decided it was time to get out of the passengers seat and plant my fat butt in my own rig. I bought a '91 YJ (6 cyl, 5 speed), worked a ton of overtime and slowly started to build it up. Over the Memorial Day weekend in '06 me and my brother-in-law installed 4" RE lift, 1" RE greasable shackles, a 1" BL and threw on some used Big O MT's on black Rock Crawler rims. Later i added a 1" MML, had an SYE, Super 30 Kit, an ARB in the front and 4:56 gears installed front and rear. I added the typical bolt ons, bumpers, winch lights, console, added TJ seats, made rocker guards, and a bunch of other little things.

Coming home from work last September some butt clown in a Ford Tarus came flying out of a gas station parking lot right in front of me. I basically ran over the front of the car. It whacked my jeep pretty good. It bent the frame, axle, spring,
rim, shock, broke the spring hanger, and the fan hit the radiator. I was heartbroken. It was the last project my bro-in-law and i had worked on before he passed away in June.

They said it was repairable. Maybe so. I took the insurance money and bought a clean, bone stock '94 YJ. I parked the '91 in the garage. The plan was to swap out all the good stuff from the '91 onto the '94. I would eventually turn the '91 into a trail rig.

In late November i got laid off. Hot dog!!! A little free time. A chance to get some work done on the ole heep. I decided to make more of an all around jeep out of the '94, something the wife and grandaughters would be able to get in and out of fairly easily, instead of setting it up for mostly rock crawling like the way the '91 was headed.

I decided to do a small cheap lift, around 3", and run 31's. I did a 2" BL and changed the shackels. I wound up with about 3 1/2" inches of lift. I slapped on some used Cooper Discover STT 31's on black rims, swapped the seats, bumpers, winch, TJ flares and some odd and ends from the '91.

One Saturday morning a couple of weeks before Christmas i looked out the kitchen window while i was pouring a cup of coffee and the jeep was gone. I got it back a few days later minus, tires & wheels, bumpers, winch, battery and a **** load of tools. I had it towed home, threw some stock tires and wheels on it and parked it in the back yard. It sat there for a few months. I just didn't have the heart for it anymore. I finally pulled it out of the back yard a couple of weeks ago, jerked the doors, side curtins and back window off and went for a little ride.

I decided it's time to get my lazy self motivated and get this thing done. I picked up an 8.8 out of a '96 Explorer earlier today. I'm dropping it off Tuesday to have 4:56's installed. Then i'll get busy swapping the lift and TC from the '91 and have the Super 30 kit, gears and ARB swapped out. I'm going with 35's this time.

But the first thing i'm gonna do is figure out some type of kill switch for this thing. Not the typical hidden toggle switch kill switch, but something that will atleast make 'em work to get the jeep. Or load the damn thing on a roll back and haul it off.

I had an article on a kill switch in a TJ that used a magnetic switch to activate the ignition switch but my computer "lost" my favorites and i can't find the article. Anybody happen to know where i could find it?

on my starter, i have the second positive wire that runs on the steering wheel on a push button where your cig lighter would be under the wheel. on that there is 4 blue toggles ( winch, fog's, electric fan, starter) none of which are labeled and a few fliped upside down ( didn't realize i did that until operation )

so if some one wanted my rig they would have get the key or knife to turn on computer components, then push the weird looking black button under the wheel and also have the one blue switch flicked up.. LOL AND I WAS NOT THE ONE WHO DID THIS CHEEPO JOB!! lol the p.o did and i just wanted another switch on it..

you have to love previous owners..

or i guess they could knife the key imput, and the have a whole bunch of people push it fast enough so my ax-5 wont crap out

WIll

Sounds like a plan. Nothing is more motivation than a warm sunny day and seeing your jeep sitting there and not being driven. Once it starts it will never end.

just wanted to say that that is a greally great post up there. you put a lot of work into it. i'm sorry to hear about all of that - some bad luck. really lame. i'd be down in that situation, too.

but good luck, man - i love your drive. i hope you've got better luck this time around.

and j/w, you're not going to keep the '94 as a more 'everyday' type-jeep this time? i'm a fan of that type of jeep - drivable, fun, practical, and capable. you could, like you said, turn the '91 into the rock monster. but - either way - it'll kick ***. don't give up. let us know how it goes..

Alheim,
Thanks for the encouragement. I'm not really sure just how the '94 is gonna turn out, but it will be driven more or less everyday.

I have to admit if it hadn't have been for my wife ("Just park it in the back yard for awhile and see how things are in a few months") and my buddy ("Don't let the &@$!@?#% get you down") i think i would have just sold it. But i miss driving it to much.

Think i'll take a trip to the scrap metal yard tomorrow and see what i can find to start making some bumpers out of.
